Today we arrived bright and early on a little puddle jumper of a plane from Milos to Athens. Here we said goodbye to Lacey, and Jen and I were going to spend one more day in Athens just the two of us.
We started out the day by taking the 95x bus from our hotel to downtown Athens. We had 3 main items on our list that we wanted to see before we departed in the morning.
We started off in Plaka, which is a small part of town that has a lot of shops, restaurants, and coffee bars. We did some shopping and had one last grilled Greek meal of souvlaki. After lunch we headed to Acropolis, which is a fantastic museum built over old ancient ruins. The museum held many artifacts, some as old as 5th century BC. Most of the artifacts were clay pots, marble statues, Greek inscriptions, and loads of information about the Greek gods. It was so fascinating how they built these magnificent structures so many years ago, using natural minerals ground into a paste to paint them bringht colors of red, blue, green and bronze.
We next visited the Parthenon. The Parthenon is a temple that was created in 447 BC, specifically for the goddess Athena. The Parthenon has survived many tragic events, including multiple attacks and fires. It became a Christian mosque in the 6th century AD and is now under restoration. I loved going there and feeling the history behind it... Knowing you are gazing at something so architecturally amazing and built so long ago.
Tomorrow I fly to Norway, and I will be meeting up with Jason. I do have to say that although I have enjoyed my time so much, I have missed him and am looking forward to the next leg of my trip.
