Argentina is a winner! After a quick flight from Iguazu (which had such severe turbulence that the food service to cancelled and the hosties barely got out of their seats the whole flight!) we arrived in Buenos Aires, in wonderment of its size. It just seemed to continue on and on into the horizon as we were landing. Managed to see most of the sites, did a Bike tour through the southern part into la Boca and some of the historical points. Tour guide was very informative and gave us a good understanding of the history and culture of Argentina. We also loved the Ricoleta Cemeteria.
Did have one interesting experience walking the streets. We were with Jack, our Kiwi mate, walking to the shops when a guy was mugged in front of us. Couldn't believe it. Poor guy, got grabbed around his head from behind and at the same time, the mugger slid his hand into his back pocket and took his wallet, then jumped on to a waiting motorbike. Terrible.
We finished our 3 days in BA in true Argentinian fashion with a parilla and vino with Rex and Gina. Confirmed by the fact that both Rex and I had to sort out the toilet the next day.
We then flew to El Clafate which has become our first gem of Patagonia. Even the airport is beautiful! Our hostel is perched on a hill overlooking Lago Argentino and the surrounding snow capped mountains. Our hostel resembles a wooden cabin and feels like a big home. We went on a day trip to the Perito Moreno Glacier. It is amazing, beautiful, enormous and powerful. We did a short trek on the glacier, watching where you walk so to not fall into a crevasse or water filled lagoon! You can see and hear the ice falling off the edge which become icebergs that flat in the lake (and the good news is that this glacier is growing, rather than receding :-))This place is also surrounded by snow capped mountains and the lakes take on stunning blue-green shades that is the result of the mineral content of the glacial water.
Our second wonderful day trip was to Torres Del Paine in Chile. This national park is in the top ten UNESCO national parks and it is truly remarkable and pristine. Again it is stunning, snow capped granite mountains and magnificent glacial lakes, with waterfalls and unique flora and fauna.
We always new that Patagonia would be one of the highlights of our trip. We feel very grateful to be here. Make this place your next holiday :-)
