Kirsty's Travels
Hello Everybody
Oh my gosh the last few days have been so unbelievably amazing!!!!! I did the 8hr Hike up the Franz Joseph Glacier and im not kidding it was magnificent. We got given Crampons to wear on out feet which are metal spikes and full body wet weather gear. We had a lovely day for it and after about an hour of hiking through the rain forest we were there. Its so enormous. The Guide told me it would take at least two days to hike to the very top. The glacier its self is the fastest moving in the world and retreats and advances in five year cycles. At the moment it is retreating about two metres a day!!! For that reason they cant actually map routes out so each trip is completely different. We went up in groups of ten with our instructor at the front actually carving the way for us. I can tell you there were moments where i thought the route was physically impossible but some how we made it with only a few very minor slips and trips. (not too many for me!) We went up and down hills and through the tiniest crevasses that i thought even i would get stuck in! Its really quite hard to describe but just trust me that it was one of the most awesome experiences ever! We were actually hiking on ice for about 6 hours! My gosh i ache now though. After we got back we were so exausted that most of us just vegetated at the hostel.
Yesterday we headed to a place called Wanaka. We stayed at our most luxurious place by far as it was an actual hotel! The owners had just decided to allow kiwi bus travellers to stay there at hostel rates! So we paid $23 (8 pounds) and got rooms with no more than 4 beds, each room had en suite with bath!!!!, Balcony and television. As soon as we saw our room us girls decided to have a girly slumber party style night and made chicked Fajitas we had baths and got junk food in and sat in our room watching films all night. It was soooooo nice after a really manic last few days! There was even a grand piano in the lounge which i got to play! The receptionist said i could come back any time!!!!!
This morning we went to a place called puzzle world which was fun. There was a huge maze there and loads of optical illusion rooms! There was one room where the person on the right hand side lookes like a giant and the person on the left looked miniscule so naturally everyone thought it would be funny if the got the smallest person on the bus (me!) and the tallest (andre) to go in but with me as the giant and him on the other side! From the pictures it looks most bizarre but it was really good fun. After that we made our way to Queenstown which is where i am now. We had a professional group photo taken which is lovely and then we went to book our trips for the next coming days. You will pronbably remember me saying that i had no intention of doing a bungy jump! Hahaha!!! well then i got thinking and decided that i actually quite fancy it and then i thought well if im going to do it and im only going to do it once then it has to be a big one. And guess what? Tomorrow at 12 o clock i am doing the most extreme jump you can do in Queenstown and possibly the whole of NZ. Its called the Shotover Canyon Swing. Not only is it a 60m Bungy jump but its also the largest swing in the southern hemisphere. I think the idea is you freefall 60m and then go into this enormous swing. You travel at 150kmph!!!!! I think i must be mad but im so so excited and petrified at the ame time! I cant wait to tell you all about it.
Tonight is going to be a pretty big night out for us as queenstown is the main party place in NZ but obviously i wont be drinking very much at all!
Anyway we are soon goig to go and grab a bite and then start getting ready for tonight.
Wish me luck for tomorrow. Missing you all lots but having the absolute time of my life!
Love from Kirsty xxxxx
