Well this is my blog for NZ! Its now 2 weeks into my placement at Solway College in Masterton. Since it took me a while to get this thing up and running this first entry is going to be a brief outline of what I have been up to so far......
A 24 hour flight is not the greatest of times but AIr New Zealand is a good airline! The flight wasnt too bad and I either spent the time watching films or True Blood (cool vampire show that I havent seen before!!) or trying and failing to sleep. A plane isnt the best place to get a nap...the lack of leg room didnt help either...maybe I should have got up a class (whatever that one is called where its the same as economy but has more leg room..?)...so did spend a lot of time fighting with the seat in front! oh! and sitting right behind the front row is not the best of places to sit as that is where the babies go!!! ...i got the crying one... :( However the stop in Hong Kong was well appreciated! The views front the airport were amazing but also rather strange! The mountains were sooo close and green but there were so many skyscrapers along the front...it was just an unusal sight...the mixture and man made and nature blending so well. I spent the airport time with the English people who were also with Lattitude and should I dare say that I really do like them- it was definately a promising start for the year! But it was strange to think that these were to be my only English friends for the next year.
We had a 2 day Orientation in Auckand and the place is beautiful! Im not surprised Eva was ranting about how good it was. ^^ We were running late but eventually we made it to one of the local schools where we were to have a traditional Maori welcome. Had not a clue what was going on as none of it was in English but it was a new experinence to start this year with. I first met my new flatmate Allie but didnt really speak to her much. She was quite homesick and we had a whole year to get to know each other so there was no real rush. CLimbed up the Sky Tower that afternoon and took in the breath-taking views of the Harbour. Such an amazing sight that you would never see in England! There was this zip wire off the top that I will totally be trying!!! Didnt get a chance then but will before I go! It looked so cool! The next day we had a day of introductions to the country and its culture. It was a good time and I really got to know a lot of the Germans too. Getting some ideas for travelling in the holidays so have to look that up. In the evening we took a ferry across the Harbour to go have dinner in Davenport. Enjoyed some nice cocktails and some very windy weather! Concidering its just spring it was very warm!!! We left the very nice hostel (everyone was so friendly and the cook dude was so cool!) the next morning to get our flights to our destinations. Me and Allie flew to Wellington with Roman and his mate (so bad that i cant remeber his name!! but he definately isnt the only one ive forgotten!) to be greeted by some nice wet weather. Apparently Wellington is supposed to be a beautiful place but I could really see that through the clouds! ^^
So far the jetlag has been killer! Crawled into bed straight after dinner as soon as poss! Apparently the last years volunteers all went out the first night they were there...the 40ish of us all stayed in, enticed by the prospect of sleep! Long days...little sleep...stupid body-clock...all of it took a toll! I think it look me about 5 days to get sleeping normally again
