AH! The wait was over and the Yr13 ski trip had arrived!
Seeing as I was very little prepared for skiing and had never done it before I spent Wednesday morning in town shopping for a few essentials like gloves and waterproof trousers. One this that i must document...because i was so very proud of myself....is my $5 BARGAIN BOOTS!!!! :D SKI BOOTS....$5....$5 FOR SKI BOOTS.....YEH!!! The Warehouse rocks! officially! ^^
As jammy as I am I got the row of seats, in the mini bus, to myself and tried for a nice little snooze on the way up.....which never really happened due to the most wonderful karaoke from the back seats that I have ever heard!!! LOL Emma, Senee and Danielle were very clever and brought their own speakers for the back of the bus! But this did mean I got no rest, but the hilariousness of it was worth it. Those girls are REALLY hyper!! ^^
We stayed at Christines (Deputys) hut on the edge of Lake Taupo. It was a nice little cosy place - I really wouldnt mind one myself *hint to anyone who thinks im worth it* (lol) - I again managed to bag the double bed on the bottom bunk to myself..how I love being staff! The view from the balcony is BEAUTIFULLL!!!! It over looks the lake and the mountains and when the sun is out the water just shines like diamonds! I only managed to see this on the last day however....
THE WEATHER SUCKED!!!!
We never actually got to do any skiing .... :( ... i am still quite upset about this because it is probably the only time that I will get to go skiing here in NZ. It was wonderful that Christine offered to take me, Allie, Hannah and Tim back up here next year (Hannah and Tim had never skiied before either) for a weekend. Unfortunately, it looks like, unless the get a very early winter, I will be going home just before the Ski season starts as it is very short here (July-Sept).
It really did rain basically the whole time but we made the most of the trip. On the way up, me, Emma, Hana and Danielle spent the time when the others went food shopping to go to the hot pools (Allie didnt want to go because of money and Senee could go in the water because the gaping whole in her knee still hadnt healed). We went to the public pools yet as there was no one else there...we had them to ourselves :D very nice indeed...especially when I got in as a student ;) It was still raining when we were in there but the contrast between the cool air with cold rain and the steamy hot pool was magnificent! Perfect after having done 5 hours in a cramped coach! We had to leave just after a coach full of young kids arrived...perfect timings! ^^ I really enjoyed that swim because I got to know the girls better than I had before- other than breakfast and dinner, I hadnt really spoken to them. I had never spoken to Emma or Hana before as they were day girls....so having some girly time to chat was nice. They are awesome and its a shame that they are leaving at the end of the year :(
After working up and appetite it was off to Burger King for me (which tastes a lot different here then at home! But Mc D's tastes a lot better, so I cant complain too much ^^) and then we retired to the cabin to dry out EVERYTHING and played some very funny games of cards! It was a really nice evening and I got a really nice sleep which was surprising. I think I really needed a break from the hostel...that work was tiring me out!!
The next morning we were told that both slopes were closed due to rain, winds and poor visibility. It was hardly surprising as just looking outside you could tell how bad it was. The water on the lake blended into the clouds and all sight of the mountains had gone it was so misty! It stayed like that all day but there was still hope that Friday would be better. So we all went back to bed for some well earned rest…yeh right!....and then had a lovely breakfast of scrambled eggs. After a lazy morning, we all headed into Taupo ( I have yet to see the sun in that place) to see a film, Couples Retreat. It was really funny and a good film to see as a group. We then headed to another set of hot pools which we all enjoyed, apart from Senee again, who wanted to go to the spa instead but there was no room for her . It was a pleasant afternoon but I wasn’t half tired afterwards!!! Ready to drop dead at any minute! Allie seemed more cheerful then which was nice. We didn’t get back to the Lodge until quite late but then did enjoy the marvellous cooking of Tim and his spag bol! It was peeeerrrrrfect! Then after that it was peaches and ice cream!!! That was the first time ever that I had got a tummy ache from eating too much ice-cream….but with the peaches it was just TOOO GOOD!!!! Definitely got to buy some of that next time I am in town! While eating we played a very amusing game that had all of us in stiches!!! I would divulge the details but then I could never play it again as it wouldn’t work properly…..SO FUNNY SO JUST BEWARE!!! ^^
We had hopes for skiing on Friday but they didn’t materialise by mid-morning the weather had cleared up quite a bit but as it is the end of the season there probably was problems with staff if they were to open half a day…or whatever…so no skiing for us! We all went beck to bed for a lie-in :D I HAD A BACON BUTTY FOR BREAKFAST!!! This was very exciting because I haven’t had one since I left England!! The girls, however, enjoyed spag-bol on toast……not my favourite breakfast but at least we didn’t waste food then ^^ some of us had a nice little trek up the hill to the shop and back (the long way) before packing up and heading off.
I really had a good time! The best bit was the girls sense of humour. Everything was so funny and just getting to spend time like that, chatting and laughing and telling stories, filled in something that I was missing a lot from home…hanging with my friends! I hadn’t laughed so much since I had been here and so that made one awesome trip!
