Saturday and Sunday
Saturday I was awoken by Jess popping her head in to say goodbye to me before going off to work as said a big than you to her. The rest of us sleepily woke up, Lisa and I had breakfast with Debbie and David before getting on the road for our long 5-6 hour drive to Byron bay. We again said a big thank you to Debbie and David who had been the most welcoming hosts I've come across and were lovely characters to have met to make us feel like at home in Australia. We felt sad to be leaving what felt like parent figures to us, but had to be on our way up the coast.
I did the first 2 hours of the trip where we must have looked a right pair as I had on my Australian cork had we'd bought from the blue mountains, and Lisa was hungoverly being sick into a sandwich bag....we also had issues of the curtain behind me flapping around out of control as we had gone for the 'fresh air' appeal of having the windows down, Lisa eventually got the situation under control when we stopped and strapped it up out of the way. Lisa took over for an hour and a half in-between whilst I had a McDonald's and snoozed and then I did the last hour and a half where we got lost doing a detour of Byron bay hills. It was a lovely drive and despite our warning from Debbie and David about lots of roadworks it was nothing compared to what we get in England and the views were beautiful.
We arrived at the campsite for around 6.30pm and managed to pull up (including terrible parking skills from me) and go for a wander around the area before deciding to simply grab a couple of slices of pizza each for dinner. We returned to the campsite which had TVs in the kitchen area and we were happy to see the princess diaries film was on, so just sat and watched that before getting and early night. When we got into bed I was informed by Nick that I'd sent a video to him the night before of my being poorly whilst out followed by lots of embarrassing drunk chattiness whilst I was sat on the toilet.....I was mortified and Lisa was in hysterics to find he'd show it to his whole work office. Standard behaviour from my loving other half. So that was our wild Saturday night in Byron bay!
Sunday
I had a good nights sleep in the van and we woke up to a very wet and cloudy day. We decided to go and do a food shop at Woolworths and walk around the town centre. Byron bay is a very relaxed hippy type place which reminds me of a festival vibe. The people are as friendly as they have been up the coast and the clothes shops were very my style I found it so difficult not to buy everything but despite being restricted on my luggage space, the surprising expense of it also stopped me. I bought an anklet, pair of shorts, bikini top, a beach towel and stopped myself there. We tried to sit on the beach later on in the afternoon but it began raining again so we decided to go and get ready for the evening and cook up some food.
We sat in the kitchen and I began conversation with a family next to us as I realised two of the ladies were called Lisa and Kirsty - who turned out to be friends but still I've never met another Lisa and Kirsty even just being friends before! They were from Australian and New Zealand and came here annually and there was around 20 of them, including two younger girls, Hannah and holly (18 and 15) who we also sat talking to. After a couple of bottles of wine with them, we decided to go and investigate the town nightlife.
We popped to a bar recommended in lonely planet called 'The Balcony' and had a glass of sparking wine there for $9 which we didn't think was too bad, then we went onto a corner bar/club type place and had a couple of half pints of cider. Whilst we were in there we met a group of people and sat playing a couple of drinking games with them (a guy from Australia, England and two girls from Sweden I think it was?!). The place closed at 12 and kicked everyone out so we walked back to the campsite and quietly got to bed.
