Thursday
We relaxed in the morning and then had planned to get the 1.30pm bus to Vientiane which should have only taken 3 hours. As usual, the tuk tuk was late to pick us up and then when we got to the bus station there were lots of us waiting for a coach and only one mini bus showed up. Lauren wasn't feeling well so wasn't coping with the inefficiency great. We eventually got on the second minibus and began the extremely bumpy and windy trip to Vientiane. It wasn't until 7pm when we arrived to our guesthouse - Syri 1. It was very run down, the room probably being the third worst we've stayed in but we only booked in for one night so Lauren could rest. The highlight of this hostel was that they had a tv playing fox films downstairs (yes I love my films!)
Anyway we met up with the beasty hearts for our last meal with them at a little side street Laos place and then we left them to go look at the night market while I joined Lauren back at the guest house for an early night. I watched i robot downstairs with the owner and then moneyball for a bit before joining Lauren in passing out.
Friday
The next day we checked out of the guest house quite late, booked our flight to Cambodia for Sunday and went off to a nice little cafe for a delicious breakfast which was a bit more Starbucks than street food. We checked into a hostel which Bianca and Will had checked into called 'The funky monkey' and again got a private room which was very clean with great air con and breakfast included. The only thing it lacked was a private bathroom which was 4 flights of stairs down and no towels given...but it was a lovely place and we had our own Tv with the fox film channel on (yay). I have began to love chilled nights in far too much by this stage of travelling.
We continued to have a walk around and then went onto the other girls hostel 'dream home' which had a swimming pool so the plan was for us all to chill out before they got picked up at 5pm. The pool however was sadly overshadowed by a compete eyesore of a building (look at my pictures). Whoevers bad idea that was I don't know but it meant I wasn't getting in the pool and I lay in a doorway on the floor at one point to catch some sun.
After saying a sad goodbye to the girls (we will be missed as being referred to as Steve and biology), we bumped into our friend from the UK, Jamie, who we kept seeing everywhere. Jamie had just had a series of bad events where he had gone to a cafe to download music on his phone for a long trip he had coming up. Jamie (wired on coffee) explained when he's finished downloading it all, he had somehow gone to the toilet and pressed a button on his phone in his pocket and deleted iTunes. At this point his battery was close to dying so he had fo redownload iTunes and sign back up with more coffee in a panic. As his battery had died he then got seriously lost. By the time we saw Jamie he was really flustered and despite feeling sorry for him, we had to laugh and said we'd probably see him around later.
Our evening plans were to go and eat at a Vietnamese restaurant we'd seen earlier and then meet our friend Will who was continuing to travel on his own instead of with the girls for drinks after. It was just Lauren and I in the restaurant, and after one large Laos beer we were
a little tipsy. I called my mum and dad and we watched the new John Lewis Christmas advert which failed to make either of us feel emotional, Lauren pointed out it wasn't scientifically accurate which is maybe why we didn't get it. We messaged our friend Sara who was back in Oz and enjoyed the Vietnamese cuisine which we had missed.
Our plan was then to go onto a bar called 'Wind West' which lonely planet had said has live music. We met our friend Will back at the hostel and went there however the prices of drinks were double everywhere else so we decided to instead have a drink at the hostel we'd been at earlier with the girls. After one drink there we went onto a bar where Will had wanted to meet up with a guy he'd been chatting to online. It was a lively gay bar called 'CCC' and we met some of this guys friends who were another female couple from South Africa on a three month contract teaching there and another girl from the Netherlands I think it was. We were both very tired so left Will in their company having met them and known they were nice people and got to bed safe.
