Saturday
We slept really well at funky monkey's and awoke with a mission to find a cinema where we could finally see James Bond in Spectre. We thought this was going to be a near impossible mission in itself as everywhere we have been so far we haven't found a cinema playing English films. I was devastated I missed Pan when it came out but I'm adamant il get it when it comes out on dvd when I get home. We said a brief goodbye to Will over breakfast at our hostel who was heading onto Cambodia just before us, knowing we would meet back up with him on Monday, and Lauren began the navigation.
I haven't mentioned much about Vientiane as a city... On our way in on the tuk tuk from the bus station which was 6 miles out, Lauren absolutely hated it. The streets were so bumpy and the air was thick with dust. I was so distracted by laughing at her... Also she had her hat on that I can't take her seriously in as it's the same style as what Kevin and Perry wear in their film where they go to Ibiza. But seriously, Lauren couldn't believe this was the capital and the way it had been almost deserted of all care of even cleanliness compared to Luang Prabang which had been very well kept. Anyway, as we got closer to the city, it was a lot more built up than I thought it would be and it seemed there were either really expensive cafes/restaurants/bakeries or your real cheap ones. Other than that though there wasn't really much there. There was also a lack of bins which annoyed us.
On our long stroll to find the shopping mall which when Lauren got us there correctly there were many air fist pumps, we made our way in to find James Bond was on in English and in only 30 minutes time. I have never been so excited to go to the cinema. This cinema was also the most luxurious one either of us had ever been to. We couldn't understand how just outside there were people sat on streets with rubbish all around them to come into this theatre where there were thrones outside, the toilets were immaculate and royally decorated and even the guy who took our tickets was stood at an altar with fresh white roses around him. It was all very bizarre. So we got our ticket, popcorn and drink all for only £6 each and went in in major excitement to enjoy what I felt like was a piece of home. Now in comparison to the night before when we watched the John Lewis advert which didn't touch us, the advert of 'The Good Dinosuar' took us totally by surprise (Disney and Pixar). Well we sat there and towards the end of the ad Lauren turned to me and said "I have goosebumps", well my eyes were nearly filled up and I had goosebumps as well it was completely powerful and yet so simple of man and dinosaur at the beginning of time forming a magical relationship. My kind of thing.
Moving on....James bond was great we both really enjoyed it and were on such a high, and it was the first time I'd really missed the simple kind of stuff id get upto at home. It was also a surprise to find a forever 21 selling clothes in the mall, but strangely they were being sold more expensive than at home so I held off buying any new things and thought about checking out the night market. Having left the cinema, we confidently went on to find an Internet cafe as neither of us had been able to upload photos in a long time (as anyone following this will know my pictures had lacked for a while). The place we had researched was only coming up on google satellite as a picture of an empty building but we remained hopeful. After stumbling across a strange room where about 30 Asian people were playing what looked like World of Warcraft or something all on separate monitors...Lauren and I found an Internet cafe a couple of doors down. I was skeptical on entering the cafe, we were on some back street and the chairs were ripped, the room was boiling and we were getting strange looks from a couple of the locals. After some reassurance from lauren, it was absolutely fine and super cheap compared to the Internet I had had to pay for north of Laos. We spent some time updating things and then left feeling like we'd had a productive day.
The day having been all too productive and successful decided to take a turn on us when a storm came out of nowhere. We ended up stood under one shelter for about 20 minutes just watching the rain. Again, I found this funny, however the weather had disorientated Lauren and so as head (and only) navigator she wasn't laughing quite so much and her lack of speaking Laos wasn't going down great with asking locals which way the riverside was. I think the best response we got was when I did a wave motion with my arm to relate the river in a certain direction which we got a nod back from which was good enough. We ran to another shelter area in the direction of the river and after nearly being bitten by 3 territorial dogs, a kind man put two plastic chairs out for us to sit on whilst we decided what to do. Eventually we decided walking wasn't an option and got in a tuk tuk where we got soaked with two other girls, but made it back to the hostel much quicker. After a nice hot shower, this time it was me who had a bad stomach, so we went somewhere close to eat and then in bed watched Exodus: Gods and cities (I love an ancient Egypt film) before a strange film Dragonball Evolution came on (looked familiar to something I think has been out on Cartoon Network before) and it put us to sleep.
