Here we are on Giant Mountain after a steep climb over boulders and granite walls that felt almost vertical at times. We had to use our hands almost as much as our feet to get up here. On the summit we are rewarded with an amazing view over the hazy Adirondacks. Woods and mountains stretch towards the horizon. This is the area of 'The 46', containing 46 mountains over 4000 feet high. Giant Mountain is one of them, and we certainly feel quite close to the sky.
The trip down is almost as hard as the ascent, but the group of strangers that I started the hike with has by now grown to be my friends. The toil unites us, and we defy it by telling jokes, sharing our life stories and discussing anything close to our hearts. Crunching on wild cucumber leaves adds some vitamins to our trail food and gives us a fresh taste as we climb down in the heat of the day. When we finally reach Chapel Pond, we almost race to see who can make it into the water fastest. This little dip into the cool dark lake is the ideal way to finish an amazing yet strenuous hike.
