hey everyone,
we're nearly at the end of our time in Chiang Mai after a week here. Off down to the sunny(hopefully) islands over the next few days.
Getting the train to Chiang Mai was fun. We got stuck on a mountain for a while en route which meant a 7 hour train journey took 12 hours! First time either of us was on a train that reversed down a mountain in the dark...once we got here the chilling out started. Kerry turned 24 on our first day - so we spent the whole day looking for the most expensive place to eat! The other days have mostly consisted of day trips - all of which have been brilliant. You really need to come to Chiang Mai prepared to spend cash on day trips as the town itself is pretty small. All our trips averaged about e25 but for what we got they were fantastic value.
The first one went up through a national park - loads of rain forest and waterfalls, usually the views are supposed to be spectacular but it was very wet ands misty when we were there so we couldnt see much - still great though.
Next we went on a one day trek - this involved Elephant riding (very scary but great experience- they are completely mad -if they see food off the trek, they are going off the trek no arguing), trekking through the jungle, meeting village tribes and bamboo rafting (really good fun but you get very wet)
3rd trip was a day of mountain biking. We went for the easy route. We were driven to the top of a mountain (2000m) and then made our way down a dirt path full of rocks, ruts, rivers and branches. Add some lashing rain to make it slippy and easy is a bit of a lie . It was great though, a proper adrenlyn rush. Poor Kerry did get a bump or two (or 9) though.
We also did a half day Thai cooking course so we will be opening up a takeaway when we get back.
So thats it for now - Chiang Mai is well worth the journey North if your willing to go on day trips. The town itself is nice too, very laid back.
