Sorry this entry is a bit late in getting up! In my defense, I did write this on Monday, but when I saved it to the blog it managed to disappear :) Fingers crossed it will work this time!
So Dubai was a very interesting city, or maybe a very confused city is a better way of putting it. Everywhere there is a contrast between Arabic and Western styles, and even the Western styles are all different. The buildings are amazing and the place has a lot of green areas considering it's in the middle of the desert! (Just goes to show you can do anything if you throw enough money at it!) We spent our second way walking around the city in the heat (about 40 C) and got to see a good bit of it. We even had a sandstorm that day, although we didn't see any sand!
The highlight of Dubai for us was definitely the Arabian Adventure tour that we did on the first day. It was a 4*4 drive through the desert conservation area, which in on the border with Oman. The drive was so exciting - the driver was booting it over these mountains of sand and nose-diving off of them- it was like being in Disneyland, only it was real. Then we got to get out of the cars and explore a bit and see some wild camels. They put on a big BBQ out in a desert encampment at the end of the night, with as much food and drinks as you'd like - happy days :) It was a brilliant trip and there's a good few photos up of it.
The hostel culture shock wasn't too bad - it was a grand place, but not exactly the Ritz. The people in reception (and the people in Dubai in generally) were pretty rude, which I couldn't believe. I know we're only backpackers, but a smile goes a long way...anyway enough ranting from me.
All in all, a great few days and a nice smooth start to the travels. For a flying visit, 2 days is plenty for Dubai. So off we go to Thailand for 5 weeks - woohoo :)
