Sawatdii-ka from Bangkok! One week of travelling done already - can't belive it's gone so fast. We're both really like Thailand so far. Bangkok is an brilliant city - full of life , crazy tuk tuk drivers and beautiful temples. I was a bit wary of visiting loads of temples when we got here last week because I thought they'd all be the same, but I was wrong. The different temples and their different Buddhas have been the highlight so far. We have loads of pictures up of the Grand Palace, which has the famous Emerald Buddha. We got a guided tour around that and we learned so much about how the temples were built and about Buddhism too (I even went and bought a book about it). I'm sure I'll bore the socks off everyone telling them about it, so I won't go on now.
First day in Bangkok was a bit strange because we got 'misdirected' by all the scammers who try to convince you that the attractions you want to go to are closed, so they can drag to to tailors and travel agents. We got a good Tuk-tuk ride out of it so it was all a good experience. We're wise to all the tricks now so no-one bothers us anymore. But definitely in Bangkok - don't talk to strangers!
It's been crazy hot here - I think it's more the humidity though that's a killer. The first day we nearly melted but getting used to it now. There's been two huge thunder and lighting storms too and horrential rain too, but mostly in the evening so it's fine. The hostel is fantastic - huge room (ensuite), great location and only 20 euro for the two of us each night. It's called Suk 11 and it's in the Sukumhit area - I'd really recommend it.
The public transport is good and we're zipping around on the Skytrain and the River Ferry. We stopped off in Siam Square today and the shopping is amazing - all Gucci, Prada etc...couldn't afford it even if there was room in my backpack!
The food is lovely in general too, altough we're not brave enough yet to try the food stalls on the street. My favourite so far was the Pad Thai I had today. Rick's become a duck addict. We've only succumbed to Subway/Burger King once, which is quite good!
We're off up North tomorrow to places called Phitsanulok and Sukothai to visit the national parks. Arriving then in Chaing Mai on Monday the 28th. We're taking the train so that should be an adventure in itself.
We'll miss Bangkok but will hopefully be back to visit again before we head off to China.
