We spent 3 days in Shangai in total and despite it's amazing skyline,it didn`t come near to being our favourite place in China. But it did have some great things going for it......Shangai Museum, the Bund street with all the European grand buildings from the colonial era (which looked amazing from the nighttime river cruise) and a major contrast between the glittering new-ness and the older former slumbs of the city. We also visited a classic Chinese garden, which was literally an oasis of calm in the middle of a frantic shopping maze. Oh and we also saw the famous Shaolin Acrobats jumping through three storey hoops, doing human pyramids while riding a bicycle and doing the wall of death with 4 motorcycles! One of the highlights of the trip.
...So why wasn`t it our favourite city....Well the food wasn`t brilliant compared to the Western China -too many McDonalds and Burger King :o) And after three days we really had run out of things to do there, which isn`t something you could say about Beijing. Also when we all saw that drinks were the same price as at home and twice that of Beijing, it didn`t go down all that well!
But for the mix of old colonial styles and new super modern architecture, Shangai is worth a visit. It`s also got a really cool modern art museum. We did get some great pictures there but the constant smog haze while we were there made them look a bit whitish.
