Today we purchased tickets to visit the 911 Memorial for a 10am booking. The ticket office was a couple of blocks away from Ground Zero and was a little tricky to find. The memorial consists of two enormous pools surrounded by cascading water and the engraved names of all the victims. The pools are on the exact footprints of the twin towers. There will also be a museum on the site but that isn't open yet. Work is well advanced on seven new towers.
After that we walked down Wall Street and saw the New York Stock Exchange (from the outside). It's an impressive building, as is the Federal Hall National Memorial across the street which was built in 1842 on the site of an earlier building where George Washington was inaugurated. We also visited the New York Public Library, Grand Central Terminal, and the foyer of the Chrysler building which is a magnificent art deco skyscraper completed in 1930. Late in the day, we took the elevator to the Top of the Rock at the Rockefeller Center (American spelling) which provides more great views of Manhattan including the Empire State Building.
