The paranoia about getting mugged on my way to visiting the relatives was too much to be hopping on public transport.. The amount of bums and freaks that approached me in Cape Town train station asking for money and telling me to be careful on the train was enough to justify my decision to hop in a taxi. I was thinking a thirty dollar cab was better than the chance of having my wallet, Iphone and camera snatched or forced from me.. F that!
The taxi driver looked a bit of a dodgy character aswell but all good in the end, besides the saucy fare to get there. I now know why my relatives live so far from the city; the contrast between the city center and the outer suburbs is huge. No slumdogs plaguing you in these parts thankfully.
Got to the uncles house just in time for dinner( as hoped and expected- starved myself all day..) Met a few other distant relatives and neighbors who were there like a welcoming committee just to say hello.. We spent the first ten minutes trying to remember the last time we met, twenty or so years ago it seems.. Dinner was top notch, Joyce definitely knows her way around the kitchen! The first proper home cooked meal I have had in months- I was trying to pace myself so I wouldn't look like a right pig, think I just about pulled it off..
Lots of reminiscing done after dinner, trying to patch together the memories without too much success; the uncle was sneakily inquiring about a few chicks from Tralee though he used to hook up with..before he was married obviously..
After a quick glance at their twenty three year old cockatoo and their tortoise murderer( a tortoise who killed another one..) it was nest time.Tomorrow we are going for a spin around the peninsula which saves me money paying for the tour- the joys of having global relatives..
