First full day in New York today. Headed straight downtown to pick up my ticket for the hop in hop off bus then got on to do the downtown tour.
Saw all of the iconic sights such as the Empire State Building, the Rockefeller, Times Square, Statue of Liberty and the Flatiron building.
Once I'd completed the full loop I headed to the financial district to see the 9/11 memorial, unfortunately since it was the 13th anniversary today the memorial was only open to family members so I will have to come back again.
As I was quite far downtown already I decided to get the subway to South Ferry and do the Liberty Island and Ellis Island boat cruise. Was good to see the famous statue up close and really interesting to find out more about the history of Ellis Island.
After the cruise I went to Grand Central Terminal to do the audio tour of the famous station. The tour was really interesting and I got lots of photos although I think I probably got in the way and annoyed several people using the terminal for their daily commute.
Once it had gone dark I went to the Empire State Building to do the Skyride and the observation deck at night.
The Skyride was a simulator ride which flew you around the main sights and attractions of New York, including still showing the twin towers. Was good to get to see the original skyline but the quality of the recording wasn't great, it made the Blair Witch Project look good and there were quite a few green looking people when we off.
Next I went up to the observation deck on the 86th floor. It was beautiful up there at night, seeing all of the city lit up. Alongside the usual skyline there were two laser beams pointing straight upwards from the sites where the twin towers stood to mark the anniversary.

Heather What did you think of Ellis Island? I thought it too p.c. - it seemed to me that it rewrote history!
