Arrived at Ottawa after a five and a half greyhound journey from Toronto.
Didn't know what to expect of Ottawa as, even though it's the capital, I hadn't heard much about it, so I guess I was expecting a huge built up city. When we'd arrived at the bus terminal I thought we'd arrived at just another small stop off, so was quite shocked to know it was Ottawa!
When we arrived at the hostel the building was pretty amazing and it really stood out from its surroundings; it was an old prison that ran for 100years before it was turned into a hostel. Inside was even better as it still contained its original features, including iron doors and barred windows.
The dorms were old cell rooms, which was suprisingly spacious; they even had the original cell doors and archways.
It's pretty eery but at the same time a really interesting place to stay.
The hostel holds a "crime and punishment jail tour" which starts at 7pm daily and is a historical tour of early prison life, death row and the gallows at the old Carleton County Gaol, so we'll definately be doing this tour one evening!
I'm disappointed that the hostel is so quiet and not many people here, as I'm feeling I'm missing the interaction from a larger croud and we were both hoping the atmosphere would be a little more lively from the previous few places we've stayed at. You could say it was pretty dead here - which is fitting as we're in an old prison!
