Well I am off to a bad start with my new computer. Just wrote three paragraphs and the battery died and did not save my work!! Anyway I was paragraphs and the battery died and did not save my work!! Anyway I was saying. We decided that we would go somewhere warm before venturing out into the cold North Atlantic at the end of the month. So Joy had enough points to buy herself a ticket to Hawaii. I had to buy mine so we ended up in economy class for 15 hours. Now after all that you will need a vacation. The planes these days are full and tight. Not a b**** just an observation.
We got into Maui late and the only thing lit up was McDonalds so a quick stop there and off to Ka'anapali we went. I had decided after eating my quarter pounder with cheese that I would find the best burger on Maui.
We found ourselves at the door of my favorite cheeseburger place "Cheeseburger in Paradise" Lahina. This isn't no Delaware Cheese Burger in Paradise this is the real deal. Half on the water half on Front Street Lahina. Our burgers were big, greasy and full of flavor. My Longboard beer cold as a cucumber. I really like this place and I always think of it when I hear Jimmy Buffett sing his song about the big chunk of meat. Next up Johnny B'S Paia, Maui. A little roadside restaurant with a fancy sign. Sign me up for the half pounder! Throw in some boardwalk like fries and a banana shake and wow what a great place. Joy had the pork sandwich and we had a dead heat at this place.
Off to the races again we were at the "New" Burger joint in Lahina "Fat Cat Café" Little weak on the name but a good burger. Give us street side seats and I move them above Johnny's. Good salesman at the stairs steering you in place could use a better spot I give it third place. Okay okay this ain't no food critic corner. And we came here to see whales and we got that.
We saw many whales, we saw baby whales, we saw jumping whales, we saw whale bones. If you come to Hawaii in January and don't see whales you're not looking too hard.
On our whale watch tour we had an adult male jump straight out of the water 80 yards from our rubber boat! We also sailed to Lanai on a catamaran enjoy breaching whales the whole way there. Once on Lanai we hiked out to Sweethearts rock and took in the view. We were turning around to leave and here comes a couple all duded up white dress and all. They were getting Married right here right now. So with the Preacher in tow and Joy and me in our swim trunks (me shirtless!) we watched them get married and gave them a good round of applause. I'm sure us two in the back ground as they were married nothing could be any worse go wrong in their marriage.
So for my birthday I wanted to see a sunrise up on the volcano and Joy wanted to sleep in. We raced as fast as we could but missed the sunrise by five minutes! But there was plenty of parking as everybody was leaving. Back at lower levels we toured the island both west and east. Hitting the areas that the rental car companies don't want you driving their cars on. Found a great spot for lunch; saw a sign written on an old surf board "Troy's" Island Plate Lunch. So we hung a right and found Troy's under a tree in a small park catering to the local surf crowd. Might have been the best and cheapest meal we had yet. Troy and his Wife showed us different island spices and told us where to go next.
Time grew short on our stay in Maui and before we knew it we were back on a plane heading home. This has been just a warm up blog as we are now back at an airport ready to fly to Miami to meet up with Carnival Destiny on Monday. Heading Trans-Atlantic to Italy. First up we'll visit with some friends and stop at the Hallandale Thrift shop.
