Week 6
This week we started in Wuhan but were making our way to Shanghai where we are planning to stay for about 6 days. I am really hoping Shanghai is normal, need some normality again. We travelled by train from Wuchang station to Shanghai on the faster train which takes 5 hours. Also Niamh changed her plans a little and has decided to travel with us to Shanghai.
So made it to Shanghai, this has to be the best city in China so far. Apart from Xian but the two cities are very different. Xian is an old city whilst Shanghai is a very commercial and lively city. Shanghai has a great feel to it. We stayed near the bund and only a four minute walk to the famous Nanjing pedestrian street, full of department shops and restaurants, had a great buzz about it.
We stayed in Shanghai for about 6 days in total. The weather was dull, wet and grey only a couple of days where the sun shone but was still cold.
During my stay we took a tour bus around the city a great way to get an idea of where to explore next. There are a few markets around Shanghai and was great fun haggling for things as they would drop the prices quite instantly. I did end up spending quite a bit on souvenirs here. As I have no space in my rucksack i have ended up sending them home.
At one point we had lost the boys in the market so tired to get an announcement made, however the lady handed the tannoy over to me to do the announcement…what great fun that was. Niamh couldn't stop laughing. Later found out that the boys hadn't heard the announcement.
Also went out of Shanghai to a place called Zhujiajiao which is a town built on a river, a little like Venice. Took a boat tour around, think we got ripped off, paid 120 Yuan (£12) but the tour only lasted 20 minutes.
We visited the bund and saw the skyline which was all lit up at night and looked really good.
We also visited a place called Taikang lu which is narrow streets full of arts and crafts shops as well as restaurants, was nice to get lost in these streets. Nicest thing was no cars or bikes could just walk around, but then again there were the Chinese people who can't seem to walk straight.
Also went a visited the Jade Buddha temple. Think I have had enough of temples now. It was nice to see but all the temples seem to blend into one for me at the moment. Think I'll leave temples well alone until I get to Cambodia.
The 6 days went pretty quick and glad I came to Shanghai was good to see it.
On my last night at the hostel I decided to walk straight into a glass door…Yes it really hurt, bloody glass- it's dangerous. Even two weeks later still had a bump on my head thank god no one can see it.
