What an interesting day! Robert had wanted to make it to Elko, NV, today & we did, just barely. It took us 10 hours to drive 389 miles!
We took the High Desert Discovery Scenic Byway Route through the Diamond Craters & Steen Mts. When we stopped @ Jenkins Museum, Store, & Visitors Center, Robert made a new friend...Richard Jenkins. He is a 5th generation rancher & was just full of all kinds of info about ranching in the area. Robert had a great time swapping stories & shopping for western wear. I looked @ all the historical info & bought 2 postcards.
We drove thru lots of country with lots of fat, happy cattle & stack after stack of hay...really pretty.
Elko is really a big, busy city. Next week starts the famous Cowboy Poetry Gathering & I think some have already ridden into town. We were lucky to get the last room @ Holiday Inn Express. The owner said he had one room left on the 3rd floor but it had a sheet over the window because the curtains were getting fixed & he'd give it to us $20 cheaper. Of course Robert went for it!
Then the guy told Robert we had to eat @ a Basque restaurant & said Biltoki's was the best. We went & let the chef choose the food he wanted to serve us from the specials. For $31.56 we had (get ready, I'm not kidding) bread, cabbage & tomato soup, Basque salad (crisp Iceberg lettuce with mayonaisey dressing), green beans with peas, spaghetti, Basque Chicken (tomato & onion) meatballs, Basque Beef (which I ate 2 pieces of & Robert just told me it was a COW TONGUE!), lamb chops with mint jelly, Basque Beans (small beans, like a baked bean but Basquey), & french fries! I told her we wanted the check & she couldn't believe we didn't want a to-go box or dessert.
We haven't decided where we'll go next, but it will be in the general direction of south.
Hope you & yours are well...we're stuffed!
Kathleen
