Really there isn't much of great interest to talk about today since today was somewhat a travel day for us. Right now as I type this I am on our private balcony on our cruise ship which is ported in Whittier, Alaska. I am looking and some of the biggest, avalanche/snow-covered mountains I have ever seen on one side and the inlet of the ocean on the other side of the ship. The town of Whittier is very isolated but absolutely beautiful. It's what you always imagine a small town in Alaska untouched by man until about 60 years ago to be like.
This morning we got up and had breakfast at their version of Baker's Square near our hotel. I had eggs with Reindeer sausage. It isn't much different from regular pork sausage-just a litter more gamey and a lot more seasonings. After that we then got our things packed up and ready to go and killed some time. We sat in the car next to Lake Hood and watched planes land and take off on the lake. The lake is the largest float plane port of its kind in the world. I think we all need those planes for Lake Camelot; we could come and go quicker than driving. Have to be at work in 2 hours? No problem!
After that we had to return our rental car and took a shuttle to Whittier. Unbeknownst to me, I accidentally booked the scenic tour, so we saw all the stuff we saw yesterday again! It wasn't totally a wash; it would have been nice to just get here, but when we went to the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center again, we were able to see the Red Fox (who had just gotten up from a nap) and the Black and Brown Bears (who were hiding yesterday). Of course we went through the tunnel through the mountain again, which we found out it was as recent as 1990 when cars were allowed through. It used to be that train was the only way you could get to Whittier or you would put your car on the train to get through the tunnel. To me, that really explains how isolated the town really is.
Check in to the ship was a breeze. We got here, got to our room and then went for a walk around the ship. It's a beautiful ship and we will not run out of things to do the next three days while we're at sea! There's lots of bars and restaurants throughout the ship, many with leather couches and such.
Tomorrow we cruise through College Fjord, which truly is not far from here at all. We start cruising through at 6 am, which is when our breakfast is delivered to our room tomorrow morning. We only cruise through that until 9 am, so it's very brief. I have a tee time of 12:30, which should be cool. It's a golf simulator in which you pick your course and you actually take a golf club and hit the ball into a screen and it estimates the trajectory of the ball. So, I will be playing 18 holes tomorrow without the walking-should be fun!
Hope everyone's enjoying the blog-I wish for you all to take a trip like this someday because this is definitely a trip everyone should do at least once in their lifetime.
