Yasas! (Formal hello in Greek!)
We have covered a lot of kms over the last week or so.
* From Dubrovnik in Croatia, we caught an overnight ferry to Bari which is on the east coast of Italy. After spending a day trying to pass time there under a tree, we caught another overnight ferry to Corfu. Two overnight ferries in a row was not the best idea but we didnt have much of a choice.
* The Greek Island of Corfu (which in greek roughly translates to the "land of the sunburnt pom") is really nice and a lot bigger than you'd think. We were staying in a resort that was out of the main town and on the coast. I am convinced it was the setting of that TV show the Villa all those years ago. Top show. Anyway the deal was buffet breakfast AND buffet dinner included in the price so we loved that! It was a great place to recoup and we felt rather spoilt as backpackers staying there.
* After a few days in Corfu we went on a killer 9 and a half bus ride to Athens. There was no leg room, we saw 2 roll overs and the bus seemed to be going at 60kms the whole way. Not fun.
* We arrived in Athens to find out that we were staying in the dodgy part of town (Omonia). You know, drug deals and prossies right outside our window. What a cultural experience.
* Athens is dirty, smelly and hot! It wasnt cooler than 37 degrees the whole time we were there. Not the best when you are trying to sightsee. Apparently Athens got a "face lift" before the 2004 Olympics! Hard to see where.
* Checked out all the famous sights - Acropolis and all the ancient sites, the stadium of the first modern Olympics and the really interesting Archaeological Museum which is apparently one of the best museums in the world. The Acroplois was awesome. The crowds werent. As far as ancient ruins go, they are everywhere! We were continuously stumbling over ruins in side streets that werent even signposted.
* We were planning on catching an overnight train to Istanbul from here but were told that we couldnt book tickets until we got to Athens and when we went to book, we were told the train was full. The result? An extra night in our dodgy neighbourhood and us forking out more money for a flight, given that we only booked it 3 days beforehand. Great.
* Anyway, Istanbul is our last stop on our little European tour and then we are back to London for 3 nights.
Will keep you posted.....
