Hello there!
Recent updates on our Croatian travels for those who are interested:
* From Zagreb we flew to Split. The flight took only 30 minutes (and we thought Perth-Kal was a short flight!) It actually took longer to get into the town from the airport than the flight itself.
* Our accommodation was right in the middle of the old town which was great. We walked around Diocletians Palace and climbed to the top of the tower which gave us a good view of the city and its surrounds. Split is a very scenic place but VERY touristy. In all our travels so far, we haven't seen so many Aussies in one place!
* After 3 nights in Split, we boarded the ferry to Hvar Island. This is the place where all the celebs come to have a break. We were on the lookout but didn't spot any tho…bummer. Hvar is a fantastic island with beautiful clear water and a Venetian style town. Again, we enjoyed fresh seafood and real pizza.
* After our time in Hvar, we caught another ferry to Dubrovnik (the Brov). The "ferry" was a massive old school, ex love-boat cruise ship complete with a seedy dance floor and all! Despite the boat, it was a really nice trip and we got to see heaps of the Croatian Islands.
* We arrived in the Brov to a gathering of locals trying to get us to stay in their private accommodation. Seriously, we were bombarded with offers and I had to literally push people away. We had already arranged a private apartment in the old town. The location of the apartment was the best! Right in the middle of the old town, next to the city walls and about 20m from the ocean!
* In the Brov we walked around the city walls (2 kms) and got a great view of the city and the ocean. The walls are in great condition considering they're pretty old. They are no doubt the best city walls we've seen.
* If Split was full of Aussies, then this place is the newest state of the U.S. So many yanks here. This place is also one of the busiest places we've been to. Heaps of cruise ships stop here so at times its wall-to-wall people.
* Another interesting fact bout the Brov…..if u are a cat lover, come here. There are feral cats EVERYWHERE. Gerard has permanently had an allergic reaction. They are so disgusting - we even saw one eating a pigeon yest that it had recently slayed. Sick. Gerard thinks a lot of them are lead deficient.
* Last but not least, we are now officially footy fans. No, not AFL-over that - Euro 2008. Croatia is mad about the sport and last night everyone stopped in the street to watch the game against Austria. Luckily the Croats won 1-0 so everyone was happy and there were no riots. Phew!
So our Croatian chapter is over. Next up: Greece.
Stay tuned…
