On our next day in Langkawi, all but Linda head off on a full day's tour of Langkawi with Sayid (a absolute legend of a man, who was a local expert, hilarious, knew everyone, knew everything, generally a joy to be around.) We started by heading off in the PRIVATE (yay) minivan to the Oriental Village and Cable Car. Sadly the cable car is shut for renovation, but luckily that would be the only disappointment of the day. We feed some fish, and wander around a tad before jumping back into the van. Next stop, waterfall. On our way the heavens open, and we decide that the waterfall would be enjoyable later. So Langkawi is a duty free island (probably why everyone is so goddamn chilled there) and Sayid suggests we go and buy so booze to last us before heading into more expensive Malaysia. We all act like kids in a candy store at the duty free shop, and but vodka, ciders (in my case), sweets and chocolate.
Next stop, the craft village. We watch a very talented man blow glass into the shapes of swans, and fish. I buy some actual crystal wine glasses for the equivilent of 8 GBP (happy days) and we then head to Langkawi's museum. Sayid walks and talks us through Langkawi's history, and we also discover the background's of traditional weddings in Malaysia, along with some very scary facts about Bornio (never turn down a drink btw, or you may leave without your head.)
Onwards to lunch at a VERY local buffet style restaurant (we were the only ones who ate with cutlery), where women cook up vats of different meats, currys, stir frys and grilled fish, and we all ate under a sheet of metal whilst the heavens opened. Full bellys and content travellers all round again.
I will have to do a whole separate blog post about the mangrove tour we did next. It was, I believe, one of the best days of my life so far, so I would hate to rush it when I only have 5 mins left on my computer clock in the hotel!
If you are reading this, I thank you :)
