Hola a todos!
Recent updates:
I'm not sure how much of a toll swine flu has taken on your lives but here in BsAs it's alive and thriving. like i mentioned before, elections took place last weekend and so the reality of the flu was kept covered until afterwards (when the minister of health quit the day after elections) anyway long story short all public schools in the country are currently on a 4 week winter break due to the flu. it is normally 2 weeks but they started it early.
though to counteract not having kids together in school, in certain shopping malls, cinemas, etc there are age limits (ie can't go if you're under 18)
also to get into a club the other night i had to have my temperature taken! the whole keeps running out of alcohol gel, many people still have masks or at least tightly wrapped scarves around their faces.
the point is.....that LIFE (my volunteer org) has been somewhat shut down as well. the soup kitchens were told to shut down (by the gov) as well so there arent groups of people in close quarters. however, with no school and no soup kitchens the kids aren't getting fed much at all. we are continuing activities and bringing snacks but are only allowed to be outside so we're in a big "field" aka the kind of plaza/common area of the slums. meaning yes there are drug deals, etc going on while we're out there. so far it has gone really well tho and the kids are loving playing outside with us. we even brought some kites last week that were really fun.
all health concerns aside- im going to bolivia!!!
a few of my good friends here are leaving in a few days to go traveling around the north of argentina/ peru/ bolivia. i will be meeting at least one of them in La Paz on august 31. we will start the trip there and make or way back south through bolivia and argentina and i will fly home on the 13th getting to madison august 14th.
im very excited for this trip and have begun my what im sure will be extensive research. la paz is the highest capital city in the world with an altitude of 12,000 ft! so much for going up slowly- im flying in! should be interesting- apparently the thing to do there is buy coca leaves and chew them haha.
not sure of our itinerary exactly but i know we'll be going to the salt flats which are the biggest in the world. please google "salar de uyuni" and look at the pictures- looks amazing right? that will most likely involve a 4 day jeep tour with a guide for about $75 everything included.
im also going to put up some new pictures- enjoy and i hope everyone is well!
