Hi!
Were in Cambodia now, but I am going to give you a quick update on our last destination in Laos, the 4000 Islands, which are in the deep south of the country. The Islands are actually where the river mekong has split many times, so its not full of beaches!
We spent 1 day on Don Khong ( the biggest island), which was very quiet and peaceful... there are not many tourists in this area which is quite nice :) We cycled around the island for the afternoon through some local villages, all the local children shout "HELLO" when we cycle past! We tried a local speciality of fish steamed in a banana leaf with coconut milk and spices, which we had to order 2 hrs in advance, it was very strange... had the consistancy of a thick set custard but was fishy. Actually quite tasty!
We took a very long journey in a tiny boat the following morning to Don Det Island, it is much smaller with more tourists, every other building we saw along the shore was a 'sunset'or 'sunrise'bunglow!. We chose to stay in Mr B's Sunset bungalows. Our room was a tiny hut on stilts overlooking the mekong, outside on the terrace was a hammock where we spent the morning relaxing and reading. Unfortunalty there was no sun, and the weather was looking a bit threatening! We went cycling to a nearby island Don Khon to see a large waterfall, just as we arrived we got caught in some heavy monsoon rains! Had to take shelter for a good hour. The waterfall was pretty impressive, but definatley one you woudlnt want to swim in, it was way too powerfull! It was a very muddy journey back, didnt help that Tom's bike pedal kept falling off the bike, so the journey took ages!
The next morning was the bumpiest jouney I have ever been on which took pretty much all day, we were almost thrown out of our seats a few times! Got ripped off at the Cambodian border, we had to pay 5 extra dollars as well as the visa fee for officials to put a stamp on our passport and let us walk on, including a health check where we had to pay to have a temperature probe pointed at our head. Better not to complain though, as some French people did and held up our bus for an extra hour, very annoying!
Now we are in north eastern Cambodia in a plave called Ban Lung which is in the coutryside. Will give a new update shortly,
Bye for now!
