Hello all!
Today we are all quite excited as we are just finishing our last few days of work! Can't believe that we have been here for five weeks already...we are planning to head back up towards lake Taupo, then down to Tongariro National Park before coming back to Napier as we have tickets to watch England play cricket! (Neil's idea).
Work for all of us has been off and on. Neil and Rach have been working for the same guy in vineyards but work hasn't always been available for them and in the last five weeks i have had three different jobs. My first was weeding in a garden for some multi-millionaire but that came to an end because the owner decided that they wouldn't be coming to their summer house for the holidays and so our hard work was pointless! There was no one there to see it...The second job was working in a packing shed packing peaches which was ominous but a hell of a lot better than my last job which was picking apples. Urrgghhhh. I had to wear a big bucket on my front which was strapped around my shoulders to put the apples in. I also had to carry a pair of ladders to enable me to get the apples from the tree tops. We had to be very careful and selective; no green ones, no small ones, no bruised ones. I was instructed to place the apples in my bin, not drop them in. Don't knock them and don't drop them, don't snap them off, roll them off, oh and to fill a huge wooden crate which, once full, would only be worth $35, if the apples were all perfect! I started out working with my Italian friend Caterina but i resorted to filling my own bins after she came right out and told me i was too slow, amungst other things!
We have made alot of friends here at Aqua lodge so we will be sad to leave but i am pleased there will be no more work for a while and when there is a need for it...it won't be picking apples!!!
