When you look at a map of Newzealand, Hawkes Bay looks like it should stretch from Nuhaka or Wairoa all the way down to Napier and Hastings. This didn't seem to be the case when we arrived in Wairoa looking for work and the lady in the tourist information told us that our best bet was Hawkes Bay??? We didn't really want to go too far down the coast, probably no further than Raupunga because we were wanting to go back up on days off to see the East Cape. We had heard from a few people that Hawkes Bay was the best place to find seasonal work yet here we were, or so we thought, being told to go there....it seems the Kiwi's call Hawkes Bay Napier and Hastings. So on we went to Napier!
When we arrived late in the afternoon we haeded for a recomended holiday park. Kennedy park is actually called a complex and we were about to find out why! The holiday park was HUGE and there were tons of families there too. (This is, after all, their summer holiday season.) The amenities on the site were immaculate when they weren't over run with screaming children! There was a swimming pool which was impossible to swim in, a sky tv room, trampolines, play parks...you name it, this place had it!! We asked at reception if they knew of the best place to look for jobs. They were clueless which was quite worrying.
The next day we parked up in town and had a look around the hostels. The occupiers were alot more friendly here and most of them actually organise work, free of charge for the people staying with them. We managed to get a few numbers for people wanting casual workers, mainly, jobs were on farms fruit picking and things such like. We ended up going back to one of the first hostels that we had been to that day because he had a camping area at the back of the hostel and he said that he could organise some work for us.
Aqua lodge is in a quiet street about five minutes walk from the town center. The hostel is made up of three houses put together. Tony, the guy who runs the hostel is a nice guy and he helped us sort out the IRD numbers we needed in order to start work. We spent the rest of the day rumaging around a recycled clothes factory in search of some clothes to work in. Things just get ruined so we didn;t want to spend too much money! In the evening Tony came to tell us that he had organised a job for a girl to start the next day and another job for someone else to start the day after. Working apart wasn't ideal and neither Rach or i wanted to do it so we went to ask Tony if he could find something for the three of us. He said he could but it could take three or four days and so i decided to take the job for a girl which was to begin the next day. I thought that one of us might aswell be working!
