When we went to Kelly Tarltons on Saturday afternoon (16th December) we were full of great expectations; an Antarctic and underwater adventure! It was fairly expensive to get in ($30 each) but for one reason or another the girl on the desk gave us a voucher for BOGOF so we got in a little cheaper. At first it was a bit like being in a museum as there were a few displays of Antarctic bunks and things such like. After that we managed to catch the end of the stingray feeding. The stingrays (yes, the creature that killed poor Steve) were awsome, they were huge and they kept flapping their fins (or whatever it is they have!) on the top of the water at the keeper. It was through the water tunnel next which made me feel like i was at the deep in Hull instead of in Newzealand! The last part of the adventure was a ride on a snow cat through the Antarctic... well... not quite. We got into a carriage that took us through a snow tunnel and then through a room where there were lots of penguins and not so much snow. I wasn't really that impressed and did feel sorry for the penguins. Would i reccomend going? If you've got kids, maybe but probably not! Sorry Kelly.
On Sunday morning we took a ferry accross to Rangitoto Island, a volcano which erupted from the sea just 600 years ago. The walk to the summit was quite interesting because the landscape was so weird. The ground looked like it should be soil but it was rock hard and suprisingly, there was so much plant life, most of which was the Newzealand christmas tree. From the top of the summit the veiws were amazing and for once we had a good day which made them even better! I'm sure the photos will say more than words...
