Before we left Paihia in the Bay of Islands we hung around for a few days waiting for the sun to come out so didn't do too many exiting things! We met a few nice people while we were there so they kept us entertained. On Wednesday 12th we left the Bay of Islands in the hope that we will return when the sun decides it wants to comes out!
On Wednesday night we ended up in a small town called Opononi on the west coast of the peninsula. We stayed there for the night and left the campsite the next morning but before we left the town, we took a boat accross to the other side of the beach where there were huge sanddunes to do some sandboarding. It was great fun although i'm not too sure Rach enjoyed it! When we left Opononi we headed further down the coast stopping on the way to see one of the worlds larged Kauri trees which was pretty impressive. We drove for most of the day until we reached a place called Matakohe.
Matakohe was really tiny and the only thing of interest there was the Kauri museum. The museum had a large raange of exhibits, some of which i did wonder what relevance they had to the Kauri tree! It was quite interesting and some of the displays were great but i got a bit board towards the end. Neil thought it was 'fascinating'!
From Matakohe we drove further south down the west coast of the Northland until we arrived at Muriwai beach. A short walk from the carpark brought us out at a boardwalk from which we could see hundreds of gannets. The gannets are nesting at the moment so there were lots of babies too. It was an awsome sight to see hudreds of these birds pirched on top of the cliffs jutting from the sea. I supose you had to be there to appriciate it...!
