Kasey Rae's Adventure Down Under 2006
Wow, I haven't written in a while. It's been nice though to be disconnected. Not that I don't love everyone, but it's fantastic to have no cell phone, no house phone, no computer, and such. Try it for a week-it's great.
Anyway, today we had a mid-term on Australian Environment and Aboriginals. It was challenging on some questions, but for the most part I think I did well. I thought I was ahead of the game by reading the book last week when everyone else was still reading last night, but I'm sure it was more fresh in their heads. Oh well, we'll see.
The last few days have been fun. Two days ago after our Ecological diet lecture I walked to Brokenhead Preserve with Peter and climbed the rocks below the littoral rainforest cliff and then went snorkeling at this little secluded beach. The night before I made the mistake of watching Open Water. Visibility was low so I kept imagining a shark coming out of nowhere and eating me. Needless to say I didn't snorkel very long, which was probably better since the tide was coming in and throwing me against the reef and rocks every now and then. I did see a sea robbin I think (it looked like one but who knows) and a bunch of sergeant majors. On a clearer day I think it would be better. We did see a nudist fish...oh wait that was a weird man completely nude on the beach. I'm all for living freely, but he didn't seem to care at all that two people were there as well. He just kept walking around waving with his extra limb. Interesting Aussie. LOL
On the way back we walked through the rainforest and then walked all the way back to the houses and rushed for our cooking lesson with Pru. Oh on the way to Brokenhead I finally saw pelicans, my favorite shorebird. There were two huge ones, gliding very close to the sand a few feet away. Amazing.
Back to the cooking lesson. We learned how to make organic rice paper rolls with peanut sauce, organic green curry with vegetables and rice noodles, and tofu shish kebab. It was by far the best meal I've had here, probably since it was made with love from everyone in the program. I can't wait to come home and make it for everyone. Yummy Yummy.
What else have I been doing this week? Oh, I went surfing for a little. I basically grabbed my friends board and went out for a half an hour. Five tries landed me three rides, so I was happy with that. The waves were a good size, not too small and not too large. Sweet!
Tomorrow we are leaving for the Gold Coast for two days to see the end of the Roxy/Quicksilver Pro. ALthough it seems I'll be missing the Roxy finals since they're today, grrrrrr. Oh well hopefully I still be able to see the Roxy Crew on the beach watching the Quickie Pro. We rented a 12 person van and we have 9 people going. It should be a lot of fun. Apparently the Gold Coast is just like South Florida so I should feel at home although a commercialized area gets old quick. So two days will be ideal.
This week wasn't too eventful. I've just been hanging on the beach, reading, doing yoga on our beach in the mornings, watching some aussie films, doing laundry with our new dryer, studying, have really bad iced green tea, playing pool at the corner pub (I lost three times in a row last night, eeek!), and that's about all. Oh one cool thing was last night when I was out walking I saw an owl on the power line. First one so far. I tried to take a pic but it didn't come out.
Well I gotta go. Beach and my stomach are calling. Everyone start checking your mailboxes for a fun suprise.
