Kari goes to Lincoln, England
I left my house in Freeport around 8:45AM. We arrived at the MPLS / ST Paul airport around 10:15. I had to check in and and check my bags. I was allowed two bags at 50 lbs each. One of them was exactly 50lbs, the other was 65lbs, so I had to pay more because I had oversize baggage. I said goodbye to my parents and next had to go through security. This is such a pain because you have to take your shoes off and put everything in trays, but then because I had my laptop with me I had to take that out too. I walked through without any problems, but the person before me had to go back through it about five times. So I had to pack back up with my computer, backpack, jacket, purse and shoes. I arrived at the gate around 11am, and Jason was already there, in fact he had been there since 9:30 - he got there really early. Sarah got to the gate around 11:30 and we had been getting concerned because our flight started boarding around 11:45AM. For those of you who don't know; Sarah and Jason are the two other people from MSUM who are also going to England, you will see pictures of them in my albums. Our plane was really empty and the flight attendant told us that we could sit together. The flight went really fast because we talked the whole way about how excited we were. However, on the way there I discovered that I had forgotten my credit card and debit card at my house in MN - not good! But at least I was able to call from DC, instead of trying to call from England. So I went halfway across the world with about 30 US dollars and 35 pounds. I wouldn't recommend it! We got to Washington DC around 3:30. Our flight to England wasn't scheduled to leave until 6:05PM. So we sat there, had a little snack and waited. At 5PM they told us there was a problem with the control panel and we would find out more at 6:05. At 5:30 they told us everything was fine and we would leave on time. Well 5:45 rolls around and we still had not boarded, we were supposed to begin boarding at 5;20. They announced that the control panel was not okay, a part inside it needed to be replaced and was being flown in from Chicago and would not arrive until 8:30 and we would receive more information at 9:30. So what were we going to do for 3 and a half hours - not sit at the airport, so we were off. We asked if we could leave and this guy said as long as we had boarding passes and ID - this we did, so we were off. We had to take a shuttle to get over to the main terminal to get to the cabs. We asked the girl handing out the cab passes what a good place to go was - she suggested Reston Place. We had an awesome cab driver. We got dropped off and didn't quite know where to go - it was a nice night, so we walked outside. Two blocks down the street we came upon this outdoor skating rink which was all lit up - it was really cute. It didn't take us long to decide that it was a great oppourtunity - so we rented skates and went skating for the night - we had so much fun. We definitely had not planned on going skating in DC on our way to England. We took a cab back - had to go through the annoying security and then took the shuttle to our terminal and arrived back at our gate around 9PM. Shortly after arriving there, they announced that they were now boarding our flight. Perfect timing!!! We got on the flight and unfortunately I was on the other side of the plane from Jason and Sarah and we were separated by the kitchen so I couldn't even see them. Our plane was really empty due to the delay. I slept for the first hour and when I woke up I got my food - it was really good. I had lasagna, salad, bread, fruit, crackers, and a brownie. My first plane meal and it was delicious. I fell back asleep after that and because I had the whole row of three to myself, I laid down and slept until we were 20 minutes outside of London.
