Kakadu National Park
Day 1
I started out on my 3 day tour to Kakadu today. Leaving Darwin at 6.30am we headed out towards Kakadu. Our first stop was outside the National Park at Fogg Dam. It was a man made Dam so they could grow rice in Darwin. Unfortunatly it wasnt well thought through and weather didnt allow it to happen so after 4 years it was turned to a conservation. We drove down it in the minibus. It was closed for walking as there was saltwater crocodiles there. After this we drove onto Corrogoree billabong where we went on a crocdile cruise. There wasn't so many crocodiles about but loads and loads of birds! Next stop was lunch at another billabong. The temperature was crazy hot and humid. After lunch we went to see the Ubiir rock art site. It was great to see original aboriginal art work maybe 40,000 years old. But too hot there! We went on to set up our camp at Jim Jim billabong then headed to yellow waters billabong to watch the sunset. It was where I got the picture from of the crocodile sunset. He was 4m long and after he swam upstream he ate a goose which we missed but a lady got on camera! Back at the campsite we had kangaroo stirfry for tea, then went looking for crocodiles in the billabong in the dark! (the guide told us their eyes shine up red if you point a torch! great!!! Luckily we never found any!) The night time was great because there was a storm in the distance and the lightning was great! It went on all night in the distance!
Day 2
As the campsite had no showers and we were all boiling hot it was great that we were going for a swim! We went down to Jim Jim falls. It was a pretty amazing place! We swam into the waterfall and it was so nice! Nice to be clean! When we got out we soon warmed up again! We spent quite a while down there then went for a picnic lunch with the flys!! We took a steep walk to get a great view of the escarpment. View was awsome but the weather was still way too warm! Next part was the aboriginal cultural centre. It was good. They had aircon! It was real interesting to see and learn a bit about. After an ice cream we drove onto our next camp and set-up. We went for a walk to a pool at the top of the waterfall for a swim. The water was too warm! We had bbq for tea then learnt how to play the didgeridoo!
Day 3
Today started with another swim to clean us! The pool was nice and so was the waterfall. The flys were loving us by this point! Did not leave us alone for even a second! After packing up our tents we started the long journey back. We had a stop for a swim at another pool which was nice. Freezing which was great! We had picnic lunch again and then carried on with the journey. We had 2 stops for ice creams at Mary river roadhouse and Adelaide river roadhouse. (the bus didnt have aircon so we nearly died!) We finally made it into Darwin about 5.30. The weather was slightly cooler in Darwin than Kakadu which was nice.
Right now I am on the train from Darwin to Alice Springs. It takes 23 hours in total but has a 4 hour stop in Katherine. So far it is like an english train because it has left an hour late!
