Happiness Is The Road
We got up late today and after a leisurely brekky we walked to the beach. It was swelteringly hot again today but that didn't stop a woman from one of the satellite dish caravans standing outside and ironing handkerchiefs! We were expecting something spectacular at the beach as all the stuff we had read on Broome and Cable Beach had got us hopeful. We were promised paradise with pristine pure white sand and turquoise waters. All our hopes were dashed when we got there. The water was turquoise enough but the sand was far from pristine and white. It was a very gritty sand and not the nice soft stuff that we've encountered on a lot of other beaches around the country. In places the sand looked grey and clay like and everywhere else it was closer to magnolia than pure white. The beach was very busy with all the 'sheep' clustered together near the main entry point to it. It was far from paradise and we just couldn't see the draw of this place. I suppose it must just be the hot weather up north at this time of year as there are so many beaches that are massively better than this and with proper pristine white sand. We went for a walk along the beach and for a bit of a paddle in the sea. Even though the beach hadn't lived up to expectations it was still great to see the majestic Indian Ocean. When we found a quiet bit we got our beach towels out and had a sit down for a while. We are now on the same ocean as Perth although the finish line is still over 2000 kilometres away. When we got too hot we wandered back along the top of the beach near the dunes. We were disgusted to see that in a few places there were remnants of fires and around them discarded beer bottles and litter! It's horrible to see that people can have so little respect for their surroundings. Littering is unacceptable and a sign of laziness, arrogance and a complete lack of brain cells. The people (selfish sheep) who have done this should be thoroughly ashamed of themselves. Okay the beach is magnolia and grey and not exactly paradise but there is no excuse for littering anywhere. We trudged the rest of the way back on the gritty sand, dodging debris, and back to the camp site which was like returning to a concentration camp. I wouldn't wish my worst enemy to suffer the showers and toilets at this place. On the way back in we got chatting to a friendly couple, Forbes and Jane. They were a little bit younger than us and they had been travelling around Australia in a camper van similar to ours for about two years. Forbes is from the UK but thanks to Jane having dual nationality he has been allowed to stay here longer and work. We talked about the horrors of the camp site and our respective travels. They had already travelled up from Perth and told us about some good places to visit. We then went back to 'satellite TV row' and chilled out with a beer. Why all these people want to come here and huddle together is beyond us. Our trusty fan got us through the night again.
