Happiness Is The Road
After brekky we hit the highway west towards the Western Australia border. Before we started out today we asked our trusty and friendly GPS, Mick, to tell us how far we now were from Perth. He informed us that we had 3666 kilometres to cover to get there and that if we drove non stop it would take us 38 hours and 58 minutes to get there! Still a hell of a way to go then. We're definitely going to be taking more than 38 hours to do this. Our destination today was a camp site at the Zebra Rock Mine. The guy at the Manbulloo Caravan Park had recommended it to us. It seemed perfect as it was just a few kilometres short of the WA border and because we still had fruit and veggies to eat we didn't want to cross the border today. There are strict quarantine restrictions going into Western Australia to keep out pests and diseases including fruit fly. You are not allowed to take fruit, vegetables, flowers, plants and honey across the border. We could eat what we had left for tea tonight and brekky and cross the border tomorrow. We had just short of 500 kilometres to cover before the turn off for Zebra Rock Mine. We stopped at about the half way point at Victoria River Roadhouse to get some fuel and have some lunch and then we hit the highway again further west. We began to see boab trees on this section of the journey with some of them being absolutely huge. They are beautiful and fascinating trees. The swollen base of their trunks look like bottles. There were heaps of them everywhere. Not far from the border we reached the turn off for Zebra Rock Mine. We had to follow a dirt road for about 10 kilometres. Their leaflet had stated that it was all vehicle access so we didn't think that the road would be that bad. It was a bit corrugated in places but we took our time and got there fine. We were a bit apprehensive as to what we'd find at the end of the dirt road but it turned out okay. There weren't that many people there and we got a nice quiet spot near the dry creek. It is the only operating zebra rock mine in the world. It's an interesting and unique stone that has red/brown banding on it. It is only found in this region of Australia. We chilled out for the rest of the day and watched a beautiful sunset later on. I couldn't wait to be back in WA tomorrow.
