Happiness Is The Road
Last night had been peaceful apart from a really annoying Italian person trying to tune a guitar at 11pm. What an inconsiderate git. Italy can now be added to the list of annoying nationalities. Despite this we had a good night and the showers at this site were awesome, real blast your skin off stuff! After brekky we drove back to the Three Sisters to do another walk. We again parked a few minutes walk away to avoid the exorbitant parking charges. The Blue Mountains today were looking mystical and magical. It was dry today but there was a lot of cloud still hanging in the canyons. From the look outs it was like standing on top of the world as we were above the cloud. The view was simply stunning. We stood in awe of this incredible sight and took loads of photos. The clouds were moving about all the time so suddenly part of the mountains would appear and then it would disappear again soon after. We had decided to do a walk today right up to the Three Sisters. There was another lookout here with another awesome view of the clouds. Whilst Jay waited at the lookout I descended the Giant Stairway right to the bottom of the canyon below the Three Sisters. There were apparently 1000 steps down to the bottom. The way down was a series of stone and metal steps hugging the canyon wall. Some of the steps were very steep and almost like ladders and some were overhanging the side. I had to be very careful going down. At the bottom right down amongst the mist I was in a rain forest, very different to the vegetation above. There was only one way back up now and that was back the way I had come. This was like doing a mountain in reverse with the descent before the ascent. I counted the steps on the way up and counted just short of 1000. I got back up with only three short stops and passed loads of people gasping for breath, especially the Japanese. Jay was very pleased to see me back at the top. She had been having a great time people watching and had some really funny stories to tell me.
JAY'S THREE SISTERS THREE STORIES
1. TIM TAMS - A youngish couple, early to mid twenties, turned up and there was much giggling and laughing from them as they stood at the top of the steps. And as I'd seen with quite a lot of people they were musing whether to go down or not. But why this couple stood out more than anyone else was because the young lady was holding a full packet of Tim Tams (Australian Chocolate Biscuits) in front of her. So after a lot of deliberation they both decided to go down. Both by the way were quite curvaceous and that's being polite.I watched them go down and out of view. Literally less than a minute later with a significant amount of huffing and puffing they both returned still laughing and giggling and with the Tim Tams open and more than half of them gone!!!
2. INVISIBLE MOUNTAIN - What I can only assume must have been a coach load of Japanese tourists turned up. They were all babbling away in Japanese and there must have been nearly 30 of them all with their cameras poised at the ready. They went out onto the lookout platform still babbling away but I couldn't hear any clicking of cameras. I turned round and the mountains/view had completely disappeared. All that could be seen was a blanket of pure white. Clearly upset by this they left and babbled their way back to the coach. Literally immediately as they'd gone I looked back and the whole mountain range had come back into perfect view which sadly they all missed!!!!!
3. MARITAL BLISS - Five couples rocked up and one of the males in the group who clearly seemed to be in charge and directing was coordinating who would be going down the steps with him. He referred to the ones who wouldn't be going as lightweights. So four of the men went off including the coordinator down the steps. All the women and one chap, the lightweights, remained on the lookout. Before he went down the steps, the coordinators wife kissed him, told him to be careful, stroked his head and told him she'd a lovely lunch ready for when he got back. As soon as he was out of sight she said to the remaining party 'Thank **** for that, I've had 20 years of him wanting to go up mountains and I've had enough of it. I should have known when I got out of the car on our honeymoon and thought hmmmmm we're not here for the scenic aspect we're gonna be climbing that bloody mountain.' And with that she proclaimed that she was going to spend the morning sat in a coffee shop eating cake!!!
We left the Three Sisters still shrouded in the beautiful mist and went to have some lunch. After that we hit the road back to Sydney. We love Sydney and decided to enjoy it for a couple more days. It took us about an hour and a half to get there and we returned to the same camp site at Lane Cove. It was really good to be back here. Everything was so familiar. This is something that we don't experience very often as we are on the move and going somewhere new nearly every day. We had our tea watching the funny bush turkeys again and went to bed early dreaming of more Sydney adventures.
