Happiness Is The Road
When we woke up it was raining. It was that fine rain that absolutely soaks you through. It was cold and overcast and it looked like the rain was set in for the day. This wasn't a particularly good day for viewing the Blue Mountains. We were hopeful though that there might be something to see and so we drove to the Govetts Leap lookout which was near the camp site. We got to the car park and all we could see ahead of us was white mist. The canyons below and the view was completely obscured by the mist. We literally couldn't see anything at all but white from the lookout. I have been to the Blue Mountains before 20 years ago and I remember the vista to be stunning and breath taking. The gorges and canyons below are filled with trees as far as the eye can see. In reality the mountains are a series of hills shaped by dramatic gorges and canyons. It is how I imagine the Grand Canyon in the USA would look if it was filled with trees. The eucalyptus trees give off a fine mist of oil which causes a blue haze and this gives the mountains their name. The plan was to go walking around the Blackheath area today and then go and visit the other lookouts in Katoomba tomorrow. We were cold and in our fleeces and needed to warm up. It was about 12 degrees which felt very cold to us. We decided to drive to Katoomba today and see if it was any better there. It wasn't. All the view points today were impenetrable white mist. We went to the supermarket instead to buy some warming food to have for our tea tonight. Jay made a rain hat out of a Coles bag and we saw a cute dog wearing a rain coat sat in the back of a ute. We then drove to one of the lookouts to have some lunch. Jay made us some warming and tasty cheese on toast. The view was impenetrable white again. We then admitted defeat and gave up for the day. We would try again tomorrow when hopefully the white mist would have lifted. We drove back to the camp site at Blackheath with the heating on full blast in the camper and the rear window demister on. This was like a wet day in the UK. We made a lovely warming beef stew for our tea and went to bed with socks on again and under three covers. It was still raining when we fell asleep. It hadn't stopped all day.
