Upon arriving a few days ago, we were greeted at the airport and driven three hours through the mountainous, jungle terrain of the Nilgiris, to a small town called Coonoor. Surrounded by wild animals and listening to the local stories have kept us on our toes with our guard up high. Our first night here, we met Dinyar's Grandmother; she has been so kind to us in every aspect and has provided us with everything we need for a comfortable stay. On day two, the group of us piled into a car and took a day trip to a small nearby town called Ooty, where we visited the highest mountain lookout point called Doddabetta. On our way down we stopped at a non-denominational temple at the Coonoor military base. The following day a local friend took us on a guided hike through the jungle, stopped off at a tea factory located in the hills and ended our afternoon with lunch at an old British hunting club. Just before dinner each night, we gather at Dinyar's Grandmother's house and enjoy a soothing cup of Nilgiri tea. High up in the mountains, we are quickly realizing that monsoon season is upon us. With total darkness and nothing but lightening to illuminate the sky, we keep one eye on the road and the other in the trees, ready to encounter whatever the jungle throws at us.
