The minute we got here our eyes opened up. Everything I had imagined about Cambodia was completely wrong. Phnom Penh completely changed my view about this country with its modern architecture and brightening local smiles. Our first night here was spent wandering around the night market, exploring new cuisine and haggling with the locals. Early the next morning we paid a tuk tuk driver to take us around for the day, for only three dollars each, he took us to the genocide museum and S21 prison which was converted from a school to a torturous holding prison during the time of the Khmer Rouge Pol Pot regime. Our second stop on the tour was the old Russian market, which was filled with local food stands and incredibly cheap knick knacks for whatever you fancied. Our final destination on our day trip were the Khmer Rouge killing fields. Over twenty thousand people were executed and buried at this sight with some remains of former prisoners still remaining; unearthed periodically by heavy rains. The skulls of the men, women and children are kept as a reminder of the terrifying events during this time. They will serve as a reminder to the world of the awful things that result from genocide and provide tangible evidence of the crimes that have been committed; not soon to be forgotten. That evening the six of us hopped on a bus and headed toward the coast to a place called Sihanoukville; to relax on the beach for a few days before we head north to another wonder of the world!
