So after about 4 hours sleep I was up early packing and getting myself ready to go to Portugal.
After thanking Inma and being giving a couple of wonderful gifts - a T-shirt as I only have the 2 hiking ones and a packet of Macadamia nuts I was on the bus into the city centre to meet Roberto for my lift down to Porto.
Roberto is a very interesting guy and has travelled extensively all over the world so was a very interesting and educational few hours.
On arriving in Portugal the first thing you notice is the increase in temperature from Galicia. The next thing as the land seems to flatten out a bit more and the buildings are quiet different. Another thing that struck me was the lack of cars on the freeway - an obvious sign of the economic crisis.
Porto - wow beautiful and quiet a spread out city, I was dropped off in Maiha about 7-8 km outside of the city and had the luxury of walking along the coast into the city.
The city has an amazing broad walk along the beach and every facility known to man available. I guess I wasn't expecting such a well developed city but I guess being part of the European Union provides some perks.
At 2pm I am meeting 2 Couchsurfers - Bel and her guest and we are going to explore the city together. And at 7:30pm I will be meeting my Couchsurfing host Teresa.
Ok so met Bel and 2 of her friends plus another Couchsurfers from Belgium. Lucky me again getting to spend afternoon with 4 gorgeous girls.
First we went to a beautiful park and seen a heap of peacocks being fed by an old man, next we walked around the highest point in Porto and seen some incredible views of the river Duedo and the famous bridge! We then spent the afternoon walking along the waterfront and sampling various Ports and chocolates.
Bel is from Brazil and has a smile to die for and so she worked her magic and managed to get all of us a free tour of the Famous Croft Family Port Caves which included lots of sampling. It was very interesting seeing the process of how the Port is created and how long it can be aged 50 - 100 years!
The samples we tried included a white and a ruby red and wow absolutely delicious full of flavor and not overly sweet - 1 was aged at 10 years and had many flavors and was as close to liquid gold as I could get. I was really blown away by how nice the port was and cheap as well €4 for cheapest upto €1000s! If we could get Port like this at home I am sure we would all drink it!
The time had come to go meet my CS host Teresa.
So I arrived and met Teresa and Joanna and wow both amazing girls very interested in travel and just great people to be around! We cooked dinner together and got ready for a Halloween Party! 11:00pm comes and we are only just getting ready this is going to be a big night……
