Panama Explore!! After less then 2 hours sleep I was up early excited to see the city but feeling a little worse for where after a long night out and a bottle of the local Panama Rum. By 7:30am I was pumped up on coffee and ready for my hike up Ancud Hill. The first part of the walk was through the old city and this in itself was quite interesting and as its a Sunday morning there were already lots of people out in the streets. Everywhere I looked there were amazing photo opportunities and I went mad snapping photos and playing with various angles. I love how photography forces us to slow down and really observe things- look for the unseen in things and this is why I hope to work in the photography field. Although I havnt sleapt in 2 days my mind feels very clear and I find myself having great ideas and seeing amazingly beautiful things everywhere I look. Upon reaching the start of the trail up the hill I was met by this beautiful urban jungle sprawling over a windy road leading up to the top of the hill. I saw strange rats, hummingbirds and bid all the morning hikers and cyclists a good morning. The walk was relatively easy and incredibly scenic and before I new it I had already arrived at the top. I was met by stunning views of the new city, causeway and ocean on one side and on the other the Anericas bridge, Panama Canal and the Miraflores locks. To go with the beautiful views I was in a middle of a thick jungle and at every turn had more photo opportunities with frogs, snakes, birds, trees and plants. I spent a while at the top enjoying the view before making my way down. I arrived back at the hostel around midday and people were only just starting to get up after lastnights bar run. I had to change my room in the hostel and in the process met 2 German guys by the name of Merian and Michael who like myself had just arrived and are looking at going to San Blass islands. Together we went and asked about some tours but at $250+ for 2 nights its a little out of our price range. I decided to spend a few hours surfing the bet to see of I could find a cheaper way of doing tour but unfortunately the Internet was playing up. At 3pm I met up with a lovely local girl by the name of Yarineth and after a quick meet and greet we headed out to the famous Panama Causeway. We stopped at the end and witnessed all the families out and about for their Sundays together and even got treated to feeding these raccoon like animals that live at the waters edge. We checked out the Marina, all the flash boats and saw 100s of fish swimming in the crystal clear waters - this city continuously surprises me. We then decided to walk along the causeway for 30 odd minutes and watch some of the ships going up and down the causeway and under the Americas bridge. I had asked Yarineth to take me to the huge mall so I could have a look at some phones but when we arrived it was late and unfortunately everything was closing. The huge supermarket by the name of Super 99 was open so we went for a wonder and I had Yarineth explain all the strange and unique foods I had never seen. The mall is also next to the main bus terminal so I was able to find out some info about the overnight bus to Bocas - my next destination in Panama. To finish off a wonderful afternoon we headed back to the fish market and brought a few big bowls of Ceviche and sat on the waterfront enjoying the beautiful city lights reflecting off the ocean. When I returned to the hostel I met up with my German friends and they had some good news about finding a super cheap way for us all to visit the San Blass Islands. So now I have decided not to go to Bocas tomorrow night and instead go to the beautiful San Blass Islands for 3 days.
