San Blass Here we Come!! Sleeping on a hard-wood floor is never fun but that along with the upcoming excitement of our San Blass Island trip meant a sleepless night. At 3:30am I got up and did my exercises and made a quick breakfast before saying goodbye to Rafa and Felipe and making my way over to Magnollia Hostel. Luckily the guys were up and getting ready and by 5:30am we were all downstairs, packed and ready for our 4wd. The driver and van arrived pretty much on time and after some slight confusion with numbers and groups we were packed into to the 4wd and off. First stop was the office where we paid for our transport and then had 20 minutes to do a supermarket shop. Next we were piled back into the van and started our drive out to El Porvenir. After only 20 minutes we came to a stop and were presented with the news that there was a protest going on and the road was blocked - we waited in the car for what seemed like hours before deciding to get out and go have a look what was going on. The protest was happening about 3km down the road and when we arrived the police had finally managed to break it up and cars were moving again. Our van came past picked us up and we were off again, the road good worse and we all realized why we were put in a 4wd for the trek. Arriving at the river mouth we were quickly ushered into a little dug-out canoe where we were met by our captain and owner of our destination island Mr Robinson. Amazingly we were the first boat to leave and couldn't believe out lunch - specially with this mornings 2-3 hour delay. The boat ride took us out along the river and out into the open ocean where we got our first glimpses at the San Blass Islands. The sun was out, we had fresh aircon our lungs and we all sat in complete silence admiring the many small islands we passed in this Caribbean paradise. Arriving to Robinson Island was a pleasant suprise with a picturesque setting, friendly locals and very few tourists. We checked in to our cool little bungalow (basically a straw hut with a sand floor) and then it was time for lunch. Lunch was smoked Mackeral and salad which was a pleasant suprise considering we are only paying $20 a night with 3 included meals. After our lunch it was time to hit the water and wow the temperature was perfect, we met a German girl who had been here a few days and then I had the nice suprise of seeing Carcha and Peter - a lovely German couple I had met in Panama City on my first night. We all spent the afternoon together swimming, snorkeling and enjoying the island paradise. At 5pm it was time to really start relaxing and looking around everyone had a drink in their hands ready to kick-off our island paradise stay. I started on the rum (5 year old Mexican Rum) that luckily could be drunk straight and this felt very fitting as we are on a beautiful and secluded Carribean Island. We sat around in groups having some amazing conversations all whilst be blessed with the remote backdrop of this tropical paradise. Dinner was served around 7:30pm and my mate Lil Wayne (the chef) had come through again; serving me up a big plate of fresh tuna and salad - without a trace of rice. The conversations, the people, the setting were all perfect and together with our new German and Irish friends we had an amazing night and in the end polished off 2-3 bottles of rum, a bunch of banana chips and a gallon of beer. When I headed to bed it was around 1:30am but most of the others continued into the wee hours of the morning.
