So today everyone had decided to take the day off and Jolanta managed to borrow a car so it was roadtrip time 250km to the Latvian coast and to a town called Liepaja. So Inese, Jolanta, Zane, David and I were up early and on the road by about 9:30am. I was incredibly cold and tired and unable to keep my eyes open so I slept the whole 3 hours out!
When we arrived it was bitterly cold and the wind was howling but we had come all this way so we walked along the beach and explored the ruins of the old military base that littered the coastline. I imagine this place would be beautiful in the summer but I have also been told it is windy here all year round and said to be the place the wind was born in Latvia. I can't help but feel like I am in Russia - all the buildings, weather and people scream little Russia. Next we explored the town and went to the local markets. They had this incredible smoked fish section so for lunch I got some smoked sardines and sea cabbage - wow amazing and so cheap! They also have smoked whole chickens here - maybe on tommorows menu. We visited another beach froze some more and decided it was time to head home as it was 5pm and the sun had already gone down. The trip back was long and once again I fell asleep :)
