Joey & Rachie's Travels 2006
Hello Peeps.
Well guys....the South Island has certainly been a busy one! I have participated in some real 'adreno junkie activities' which has been great fun :-)
Our first stop in the South Island was a place called Nelson which is close to the port of Picton. Well peeps, this was supposed to be an overnight stop but the hostel we stayed at, The Green Monkey, was the nicest hostel I have stayed in so far. It was just like home!!! It was soooo small and cosy that me and Rachie didn't want to leave. We got free Breakie...always a bonus on the good old backpacker budget :-), free hot chocolate, tea, and coffe and they even had a log fire and a cat that sat on your lap!! So....our one night 'overnight' stop turned into a four night stop!!!Even the owners commented on how we had become part of the furinture....hehe!! Whilst at Nelson, (Yes Peeps we did manage to drag oursleves away from the cossiness of the hostel...hehe )we did a 4km walk in Abel Tasman National Park. The scenery was beautiful. Really enjoyed Abel Tasman. Nelson is also home to the centre point of New Zealand so we took a bike ride up to the point and had our Pics taken under 'The Centre Point'.
After Nelson, we headed south along the West Coast down to Frans Joseph. Frans Joseph is famous for it's huge glacier which attracts many tourists to hike across it. Me and Rachie decided to do a 3/4 of a day trek. I think this was enough though..I had a very sore muscles by the end ...hehe.
The trek was certianly eventfull as one of the girls on the tour got stuck in an ice Kravis we all had to slide through. Well....it reminded me of something from the TV program 999 rescue as, after an hour of our guide unsuccessfully trying to pull her out , she had to be taken out with a harness and alot of help from other guides who came to assist in the rescue!!! She did manage to see the funny side in the end but It was really scary at the time as it was getting colder and colder...oppps!!
After our stint in Frans Joesph, we headed further South to Queenstown. Queenstown is a really cool place, it has a great atmosphere and really good night life. We went to a bar with peeps from our hostel called the 'World Bar' which serves it's drinks in Teapots!! As you can see from the Pictures, me and Rachie look really lady like demonstrating how drinking from a teapot is done!!
We also went Snow Boarding for a day at Remarkables Snow Resort. I had soooo much fun learning to Snow Board. I even learnt how to turn...Impressive stuff eh...hehe!! However, it was a really windy that day so guess who got blown of the Magic carpet snow board lift...you guessed it.. me!!! I have never been so embarssed :-0. Me and my board went on a nice trip back down the learner slope...ouch!!! I did it with style though which, of course, is the important thing..hehe ! It was a really great day though. Well worth the sore bottom the next day!
From Queenstown, we also visted it's neighbour resort Wanaka for the afternoon. This resort is really nice. It's a smaller and quieter version of Queenstown. We also guys......Still can't believe it.... did a bungy jump in Queenstown. Me and Rachie decided to do a tandem jump as we thought it would be really nice to share the experience :-) We screamed all the way down . But guys, oddly enough the jump wasn't the worst part or looking over the bridge at the top before you jump. The worst part is the unexpected headrush you get when your upside down pulling yourself into the dingy boat at the bottom. I can tell you, this head rush was something else!! Me and Rachie were like ahhhhhhhhhh my head!!! I have the Jump on DVD. It was well worth doing. Doing a Bungy was something I never thought I would do so I was pretty chuffed when I realised I had just jumped off a bridge!!
From Queenstown, we headed to Milford Sound which is on the West Coast. This had amazing mountains and waterfalls. From our night there we drove to Invercargill and visted Bluff. Bluff is the most Southern point of New Zealand. So peeps, as were doing the tourist thing, we just had to vist bluff and have a picture taken under the Southern Point sign!!
From Invercargill, we drove to Dunedin. At Dunedin we Visted the best place on Earth...CADBURYS CHOCOLATE FACTORY!!! Guys, I don't know what travelling has done to me but I've turned into a chocoholic!! I hardly ever fancy crisps...I just always want chocolate!!! I know......I can't believe it either but Chocolate is all I fancy. What have I been missing all these years...hehe :-) So, as you can imagine, the factory was Heaven. Me and Rachie even took part in a cholocate eating competition. We had to finish a cholcoate bar before the end of the DVD that was playing on the tour. I still can't belive how quickly we hovered it down ...hehe:-)
From Dunedin, We travelled to our last stop Christchurch. At Christchurch, we visted the Cathedral and also watched a random 'Christchurch Radio' steak eating competion. The contestants had to eat 1kg of steak and the winner one a holiday. Well guys, I know I love my steak but I couldn't have conqured this. Rachie had a good point that I should have just taken part anyway for a free lunch!! What a good idea I thought....You can tell I'm a traveller can't you...hehe:-)
Well, that's about all the goss I have for the South Island. It was such a nice place. The scenery was fantastic. I truely fell in love with New Zealand.
That's just about it from me for now :-)
I hope everyone is doing ok
Keep me updated on all your gossip
Take care
Miss you all lots
Jo
