Joey & Rachie's Travels 2006
Bula Everybody!!!
Hope everyone is doing ok? Here is the update from Fiji. Fiji is one of the most beautiful places I have ever been. The people, the lifestyle and the scenery is soooo fantastic. It's so relaxed and easy going...probably because they all run on Fiji time!! I nearly cried when we had to leave!!!I know Guys.... I am really sad.hehe :-)
We mainly spent our ten days Island hopping a group of Islands called The Yasawas. These Islands are a popular spot for Backpackers as they give travellers the 'Real Fiji' experience.
On the Monday, we travelled North to the Island of Nacula. We stayed at a resort called 'Nabua Lodge'. First off....A big thanks to Suzy and Mark for your recommendation, me and Rachie loved this resort!!
The resorts on the Islands we visted are pretty basic, I'm talking wait for it guys....'Freezing Cold Salt Water' showers and in some cases no electricity, but they provide a great opportunity to really experience true
Fijian Culture. We were also really chuffed as we got to stay in a Fijian 'Bure' . 'Bures' are the traditional Fijian thatched huts!! Also, as there are no shops or restaurants on these small Islands, everyone has to eat at the resort and so meal times become the real social part of the day, which was fun!
When it's time for food, the staff hit 'the Fijian drum' and that's your notificatition that it's time for food. By the way, can I just say, that the food was amazing!! It made a nice change from the good old supernoodle diet!!! I have never looked forward to meal times so much in my life..hehe :-)
That night we had a bonfire on the Beach, It was great to get together with other travellers at the lodge at relax by the fire. We also met a guy in our bure called Elliot who's from The Isle of White so it was great to meet someone close to home!!
The next day, we took the 'Awsome Adventure flyer' to our next resort on the Island of Tavewa. This resort, Coral View, had great entertainment and the Fijian people really entertained you at dinner. They sang "The Bula" song which involved all the Guests having to get up and dance. It was alot of fun, right up my street :-)
On the Thursday morning, we took a trip to the Blue Lagoon Beach. Oh yeah..I almost forgot... the only method of transport to the Islands from the main flyer is by really old speed boats. That you were certian were going to brake down or topple over any second!!I think everytime I took a trip on one of the speed boats I feared for my life and my luggage....No Exageration!!It was such a relief to arrive at your resort or get back on the main boat!!hehe..I'm such a worrier!!
That afternoon, we travelled to our next Island called Matacawalevu. On this Island we stayed at a resort called Long Beach. At four each day, It was teatime and I'm not joking this lady called Sala made the best cake I have ever had!!She has earned the title of the "Fijian Cake Lady" and that is an honour...hehe!!! I have never eaten so much cake!! Wow, reading this back peeps, I do I go on about food alot don't I.....
Our evening entertainment on this resort consisted of an "opening of the Coconut" demonstration. I have never tried coconut milk, and I can tell you guys It's delicious.....very yummy!!
On the friday, we went on a tour of the village Lautoka. This village visit was the highlight of Fiji for me. We visited a Fijian Primary school and the children were so cute!! To greet their visitors they sang "You Are My Sunshine" it was really overwhelming. The children sang so beautifully and were so happy. They also sang a rendition of "I'm A little TeaPot" when we vistied their class room which was fanatastic!! That afternoon, we relaxed on the Beach.
On the Saturday, we travelled to our final Island called Waya. As it was our last night we decided to stay in another Fijian Bure to treat oursleves. The bathroom in the Bure was separtared by a curtain so going to the toliet was an interesting expereince for me and Rachie I can tell you!! hehe ;-)
That night me and Rachie participated in a kava session. Well Guys.... I couldn't come all the way to Fiji and not try Kava. So I tried it and it does taste like muddy water. It also makes your mouth go tingly!! The ceremony is also taken quite seriously. Everyone sits in a circle and the Kava is passed from person to person. It was very fun evening!!
On the Sunday, we travelled back to the main resort of Nadi and got ready to go to NewZealand. I think we needed to get oursleves mentally prepared for the Temparture drop..hehe!!
That's just about it in terms of my good old highlights from Fiji. I had a really fanatastic stay and I really loved the Islands.
I hope everyone's doing ok
Missing you all lots!!
Take care all of you
Love Joey
