Cape Tribulation Day 2
(Third attempt at sending this journal entrey!)
We had a good night , we all met up in Pk's bar and it was fairly busy as it is the only place to go really at night in Cape Tribulation. After a few jugs of Toohey's I was pursuaded into having a Yager-bomb. I have so far successfully avoided them as they looked horrendous but I decided it would be rude not to have on before I leave Oz, and as we said, you should try everything twice!
A Yager-bomb is a shot glass of Yagermeister dropped into half a pint of Red Bull. The shot wasn't too bad, it was downing the Red Bull that was the difficult part. After a few more drinks I came over all sensible and decided to have an early-ish night as I had to be up early to go Jungle surfing in the morning , and we all know what happened the last time I did some form of surfing........
I woke up full of beans considering the night before and went to the meeting point for the bus. Whilst I was waiting I bumped into hannah and Ella who I met on the Whitsunday's, it was nice to see them again. The bus came and drove us into the Daintree Rainforest and to the equipment room to get harnessed up. It was only once we had set of that I realised I had been given the 'Barbie" helmet, well it could have been worse Stuart was given 'Tinkerbell'! We climbed up to the first platform which was about 20 metres high and zoomed off down the first zip wire. I was loads of fun. The instructors also doubled as rainorest guides and proceeded to impart more tee and plant wisdom on me, I was more interested on how to go faster down the wire. After the second platform we soon realised that the gut who was controlling the ropes (i.e. whether we live of die) was on his first day of training- great! I'm still waiting for my run of good luck on this trip..........There were quite a few platforms to get to which gradually got higher and higher as the forest floor sloped quite steeply. I decided it was best no to look down but couldn't help it and then I wished I hadn't as I spotted a huge Golden Orb spider dangling down from my harness making it's way towards my bum! With no where to go I just wriggled around to try and get it to leave me alone, it was at this point the instructor decided to let me go zooming further into the forest. Probably a good move as I didn't see the spider again. After a few acrobatics and dangling upside down we got to the last platform, it had been really fun. We decided from there to walk up to Cape Tribulation point. We walked along the beach, through the alleged croc infested creek and passed the random 'warning crocs in this area' signs and reached the lookout point. Cape Tribulation is the only place in the world where two world heritage sights are beside each other - the Great Barrier Reef and the Daintree Rainforest so it's a pretty spectacular place with amazing views. After enjoying the scenery and taking some photo's we decided to head back as it was unbearably hot. We had a few hours to kill so what better way than pool volleyball. We drove back and arrived just in time for the free bus to the Woolshed for our free dinner and 5 drinks for 12 bucks (about 4.50). Again, I decided I should have an early night as I had to be up early for sky diving on Mission Beach.
I woke up the next morning, stupidly early, only to find that all sky diving on Mission beach had been cancelled due to the bad weather. I was gutted, but didn't really want to do it in the rain anyway. I got talking to a girl who had just come from New Zealand and she told me that you can do sky diving almost anywhere in New Zealand and it's cheaper than Oz. From what she said I think I will do it over the glaciers near where the Lord of the Rings was filmed as it sounds like a really cool spot. So all is not lost, it may turn out to be a good thing that the skydive was cancelled - I mean everyone does Mission beach, so I will be different. Anyway, it was 7am and I was now wide awake and ready to go. I decided I would spend the day exploring Cairns.........well that took about 1 hour as there isn't much in Cairns itself - to be honest it's like a glorified Blackpool but with less to do! Still with a full day ahead of me I thought best to get boring organising out of the way and went to pay for my flight changes at Quantas. I must say I have found Quantas to be really difficult to deal with and not very customer friendly, especially in Oz. I took my plane tickets to the shop to get them changed and the woman behind the desk laughed and asked if I had put them through the washing machine as they weren't very clear. Yeah, I'm really gonna put plane tickest through the wash! They were sent to me like that by STA travel so she printed me some new ones but not before a few snidy comments were made! I then headed to the Casino where there is an indoor wildlife park. I had already missed all the feeding times, the best part, and all that was left was to hug a Koala for $40 - no thanks. I then decided to go to the lagoon, which is actually quite nice in an artificial way but as soon as I had sat down is started to rain. Admitting defeat I headed to back tot he hostel and watched some dvd's with the others.
Went for my final free meal at the Woolshed and then wetn to pack as I will be flying back to sydney and to my second home - Coogee tomorrow, can't wait I've really missed it......
Lots of love
