Cairns 26/02/07 - Australia Day
Hi all,
So we got dropped off in the centre of Cairns and The lovely people from my hostel came to pick me up and take me to my home for the next few days. I decided that after spending all my time in 'mixed' dorms - meaning all lads and me - not a problem generally, actually an advantage most of the time, I decided to check into an all girls dorm just for a change. As I had arrived so late my room mates where already out on the town which was where I should have been!Once I had checked in I had a few text messages from Martina (from the Whitsundays) and from the Bristol lads (from Frazer Island) asking if I was coming out for a drink to celebrate Australia day - after the day I've had, you betcha! I literally got changed and went to reception to order a taxi, it was already 10pm and I had come serious catching up to do. Just when i thought my run of bad luck had come to an end, the taxi eventually turned up half an hour late after going to the wrong hostel and just waiting there for a Julie to magically appear! Then I arrived at the Woolshed where I was meeting Martina and the boys and when I got in there it was like a meat market and rammed. Everyone was drunk and having a great time, dancing on the tables and throwing alcohol all over the place. I just wanted to find my friends and get a drink and just when I got within a sniff of the bar a very drunk Ozzie doing some suspect dance moves managed to elbow me in the head and nealry knocked me to the floor - perfect! I staggered (exaggeration) outside and decided to sit down for a minute and ring Martina from there. Out she came and dragged me back in (well there was talk of Tquila so it didn't take much) to where everyone was. Finally, I can party!! There was a fab atmosphere as everyone was celebrating Oz Day, most looked like they had been at all day. I heard 2 stories about what Oz Day is, one was that it was the day Oz got independence and one was that it was the day that the last boat arrived at Botany Bay (there's one in Oz as well as Chorley!) from Portsmouth. Not sure which one is right, neither did the Ozzie's who gave me these explanations - ah well, still worth celebrating! After the Woolshed we moved onto P.J O'Brian's for more shots and dancing and then to Gilligan's. Finally I gave in and let the Bristol lads go to bed at about 3am, well they did have to get up for white water rafting at 7! I got back to my hostel, god only knows how I remembered the code to get in the gate - ah yeah that's right it was written on my key! Next task, where is my room? Since I literally chucked my bags in and then went straight out I couldn't for the life of me remember where I was supposed to be sleeping! Luckily, after much wandering around the hostel, the night manager found me and showed me the way. I must pay more attention to where I live from now on!
The next day I woke up feeling a bit worse for wear and so decided today I would just chill around the pool with the occasional organising of trips and activities. I managed to book a day trip on a boat out to the Great Barrier Reef for diving and snorelling, a two day trip to Cape Tribulation with hiking in the rainforest, swimming in Mossman gorge and jungle surfing and then skydiving Mission Beach - Phew! That's enough for one day - back to the sun lounger for some much earned rest.......
Lots of love
