Hi all,
Time to leave Airlie Beach so I packed up and headed for the bus. There was a girl struggling to bet her backpack on the bus, so with my big body pumped muscles I helped her only to discover she is from Bolton. We narrowed it down to where we lived and you wouldn't believe she lives on Sunninghill Park - the same estate as me, it frightens me how small the world actually is.
The Premier Coach took me to Townsville where I then had to get a ferry to Magnetic Island. Once off the ferry it was another bus to my hostel - Base, which is in Nelly Bay. There are lots of bays on Magnetic Island, and as I soon found out, Nelly Bay wasn't the best. In hindsight I would have stayed in Horseshoe Bay at the Wildlife resort. Magnetic Island is made up of giant granite boulders, eucalyptus trees and beach basically. Half of the island is a national park and has lots of wildlife just roaming free. It is the largest natural Koala sanctuary in Queesland and I was happy that I finally saw a Koala up a tree in the wild before I left Oz. The first thing I noticed was the humidity, it was so hot and sticky with hardly any sun so not the best weather. The base resort I stayed in looked nice on the surface but it wasn't very clean and there were bugs everywhere. Now I've got used to bugs and I've never been bothered by spiders and such but this was ridiculous. There were ants all over the kitchen, if you turned your back for a second they were on your food. They were in my bed, these big fly things that made a horrible buzzing noise and insisted on constantly being on you, and when it's dark and your trying to sleep, it wasn't appreciated! The pool was really nice and there was a really lively bar but I think the Frazer Island and Whitsundays had caught up with me and all I wanted to do was sleep. The next day I woke up and felt pretty ill so instead of going to the wildlife park like I had planned I just chilled out in the shade round the pool with Martina and Andy who I was on the sailing with. Alot of the people from the whitsundays were at Base but everyone was in the same boat and felt worn out.My time on Maggie Island came to an early end when, not being able to stand the humidity and the bugs any longer, I decided to leave a day early and head to Cairns. Even though it was Australia Day I just wanted to leave, so off I headed for the bus, ferry, bus journey back. Would travelling on a national holiday be a problem? I should have really thought it through a bit more......
Lots of love Jules x x x
