Anyway, back in Bali we decided to go on the Batu Volcano trek. We were told to wear warm clothes and shoes for climbing. I only had flip flops and crocs and so the crocs it was! They picked us up at 1:30 am by mini bus and took us to the bottom of the volcano. We were given a flashlight (mine wasn't very bright) and then introduced to our guide. Off we went climbing up the volcano, the first part was pretty easy as it was quite flat. It got steeper and steeper and was difficult as the ground was loose so it was quite slippy. The crocs held out well though, and covered in dust and with hundreds of stones in my shoes, we got to the top. It was pretty chilly at the top, the first time I have been cold since I left England! We had breakfast as the sun rose from behind Mount Batu, which is facing the Volcano. It was a lovely sight and the views were pretty breath-taking. Then came the monkies, who must has smelled breakfast, and ate all the left overs. We then trekked to the crater, which I think he said last erupted in 2000, and when I looked over the edge I got butterflies as it was so deep and a bit scary. We then walked around to the other side of the Volcano where there were holes in the ground and steam rising out of them. This is where the eggs come in. They dig a hole and put the eggs in, they are then covered and left to cook from the steam of the Volcano. It took about 10 minutes and then we ate the eggs, they were nice, first time I have had eggs steamed by volcano before, they just needed some salt and pepper.....
We then made the trek back down, which was more difficult because it was steep and again the loose ground meant that you really just skidded most of the way. Once again, the crocs didn't let me down and I made it safely (just about) to the bottom. It was pretty hard work and so the only way to relax is to jump into the hot springs that are at a spa near the bottom of the volcano. The springs are heated by the volcano too and I can't tell you how good it was to relax in them after a hard night's volcano trekking! There was also a pool and a garden that looked out onto the lake it was a lovely place, I could have stayed there all day if it wasn't for the all you can eat buffet lunch that was waiting for us. After eating our fill we were then taken to a coffee plantation where they grow and make coffee, tea, cocoa.......I bought some of the cocoa coffee as it is one of the best things I have ever tasted. Lets just hope the Oz customs let me through with it as it is basically a bag of brown powder!
We got back to our hotel at about 3pm and went straight to bed. Slept all the way through to the next day, that Volcano trekking really takes it out of ya.....
Lots of love
