We had a very entertaining night last night at the Daly Waters Pub. A delicious barramundi and steak dinner plus the aforementioned entertainer, Chilli turned out to be a cracker. Very funny and a good singer! We bought his CD if only for his poem about Rusty, a Customs Dog who goes to the dark side taking many pooches with him. A bit like Macavity The Mystery Cat by T.S.Eliot, only with dogs!
Next day I encountered the Japanese tourist again and it transpired that he was setting up equipment to watch the Transit of Venus. He kindly allowed both myself and RM to take a look, so we have seen what Cook saw and what we will never see again in our lifetime! What a privilege.
Later we farewelled Barb, Richard and Sienna as they went on to Katherine and then Darwin. We set sail for Mataranka. Our camp site is again a great choice, bush setting, dog friendly and about 500 metres from a thermal slow moving 'billabong'. I say that because it looks like a billabong with waterlillies and beautiful surrounds but you float slowly downstream in water at 33 degrees Celsius! It is in the Elsey NP. We also visited the Cemetery at Elsey Station, which Jeannie Gunn wrote about in We of the Never Never and The little black princess. The graves of her husband and many of the characters in the book are there. Comms have been down from here to Borroloola due to road workers cutting a major Telstra cable. Been out for 24 hours!
